Was thinking about life this morning and came to the conclusion that the two biggest changes in the modern world in the last 20 or so years are the internet and mobile phones - am now trying to decide which is more important? which has the most impact on our lives? The obvious thing is that we wouldn't be on here without the internet but then again could you live without your mobile these days??
In my opinion, the internet has had the most impact. I really could live without my mobile (honestly!) but the old tinterweb is far too useful to imagine going without! If I had my way, I'd ban mobiles altogether - I'm aware that makes me sound like a grumpy ol' fart!
I always thought I could live without my mobile until a couple of months ago when I broke it and didn't have one for a few weeks - it was horrible! I hate not having people's numbers and not being in contact and I'm a complete gassbag and can spend hours on the phone so it really was quite hard not having the mobile. Internet....hmmm, I love the internet. It's opened up so many opportunities and I can find anything I want at the click of a button. I still chat to people whom I've never met in real life - we've been chatting for about 5 years! It's hard to choose between the two as they are both a big part of my life now - gosh that sounds really quite sad but I'm happy with that

Johnny Walker was on about this yesterday on radio 2, could they survive a day without the internet and mobile, they survived! mobiles are convenient (promised myself many moons ago that I would never have one) but with a landline the need is a lot less. They go off at the most inconvient times as well. so the internet has my vote
I like Kitkat's suggestion about the convergence of communications and computing, but for me the 'net is far, far more useful on a daily basis than my mobile phone.
Love the net, hate mobile phones. Ever had your boss check were you are by gps on your mobile? Try telling him you were at that meeting in birmingham when you were really up to your tatties in Manchester! Bloody mobile phones
Internet wins for me I have a mobile but it's never on l can easily live without it.. But the net is part of my life (sad l no) there's just so much you can do on it,

Can see within 20 years going in for an implant, net access, mobile, health check. All conected to the brain, the size of a peanut, probally match the size of what's inside of mine, except the sexual urge bit, thats just one tracked. remember you heard it here first obviously writen by the male half of outlaws

I retract my previous statement and I'll go along with Kat's as it sounds so much better!
We were reluctant mobile users. Neither of us could justify the expense. But we travel a lot in our motor caravan so we got one - probably one that no street savvy 12 yr old would be seen dead with - so that we could get text messages. You know, if something goes wrong at home while we are away. So it's switched off all the time. But when we are away, we check it every evening for text messages. But where it really proved how useful it is was when we broke down in France this year. From the roadside we were able to contact our breakdown service and, I'm not sure about this, I think the breakdown service located us from the mobile phone signal. I'm a convert. I'll keep the phone. Love the internet too though. If we came straight here from 25 years ago we would not believe the world we are living in. However - a million TV channels (well maybe not a million) and still nothing to watch. Mollie
Personally I hate mobile phones, but because my husband is self employed, he finds it invaluable. He used to run a carpet cleaning company, and he would divert our home phone to the mobile and never missed any business. I finally got used to having one when I had a travelling job this summer. I never felt vulnerable. I love the net. I was once described as having the biggest library in the world at your disposal. Great for shopping, and travelling, and everything. Love it. Love this site.
When I first started meeting people off the net a few years ago I wonder how many single women would have met people or gone to their homes without the security of their mobile - so what I am trying to say is that both are needed - but probably the internet a little bit more.

Well for me, without a doubt has to be the Internet... I met my ex over the Internet in Spring 1995... set up an Internet business later that year... Then got to know of a certain GT via the Internet first before falling for him in real life... so without the wibblywobblyweb I wouldn't be loved up or self employed...

Oh no help I think I need rehab treatment .. I spend at least £40 a month on my mobile phone and £25 a month on my landline ..... and on my computer which I use every day .. all of them .... I can't do without any of them .... please don't make me choose cause I am a total new tech addict and my entire world would collapse without any of them. :eeek: DD desparate and trembling :shock:
I dunno. My mobile also does inet....so I can read SH at work, and reply as well. If I don't want to chat to people on the thing, it gets turned off. Same with inet on the pc.
definitely the internet, we wouldn't be having this conversation otherwise - you can't chat to millions of people across the globe on the mobile unless you know their number in advance (that's before bluetooth of course!!) its a wonderful invention :jagsatwork:
Well, this is just grand! I've been boring everyone in my introductory thread about how nice and friendly everyone is and how I've felt right at home here, and now in this here thread the majority seem to share my view that mobile phones are a menace to society! (well, y'know, not quite that bad, but....on a bad day, yes!) Aw shucks, I truly feel at home! *group hug!* /
Not at all! It's about time us vivacious and fun-loving people claimed the tinterwb to ourselves, without feeling any stigma! I mean, c'mon! No longer is it the domain of freaks and geeks, as evidenced by this fine site! (not that there's nowt wrong with freaks and geeks, I hasten to add! Not really. You can view Sky for (almost) free. You'd have to investigate what channels you can get but there is something called "freesat" which is what both me and my partner have. There was a one-off payment of about £23 and you get hundreds of channels - some you've never heard of like ITV 4 and Sky 3. Don't post post phone numbers Mollie
It has to be the internet.....where would we be without this sort of site..and our email etc.. You can find anything or learn about anything on the net..but with the onset of better phones and links between phones and Internet, perhaps there is and argument for phones
yes the internet...I've seen it develop over the last 10 years and now even my mum uses it...train and flight timetables/shopping/reading/tax disc for car/bills to go on, imagine the amount of legwork that saves....oh, wait a minute, doies that mean we'll all turn into porkers
It's gotta be the mobile phone.......as long as you've got worlwide coverage....I have..just in case..!! Countless people, ...(including 'You'.... no doubt?)...explorers..hostages (remember the msgs from 911....last and final mobile phone msgs to the wife, husband, kids, parents etc...!!) business deals.....have Relied on the good old Mobile..... Smug git !!!!! .......... but what you've said is very true, and in a way kind of scary....... but for me I'd give up me mobile anyday........... Me first brick was installed in me car......... I used to take great pleasure on a journey to scotland turning off the M6 at that turnoff on the top of Shap and sitting there for half an hour or so, knowing that no fecker could call me cos there was no reception :grin:
