The iphone.....a fad or a tool?
Well, I needed a new phone as mine had gone a bit odd....but what to get?
There was only one choice....the iphone.
Why? Well, because its all new and sparkly and people seem to be talking about it.
So....its a phone....it has wizzy swipey 'Minority Report' style functionality. You can download all sorts of games and applications and a great big screen to browse t'internet.
...but....the camera is crap, 2 megapixels and not a decent lens either, connectivity is rank....apparently a common apple theme, so bluetooth is very limited....and worse of all....despite t'internet, I can't get SH Chat!!
So, you choose, shiny spangly object, or a proper phone??
well I do like spangly shiny stuff...
but I read all the reviews and plumped for the LG Viewty. As one reviewer put it "the touch screen phone the iPhone should be"
:smug: quite happy with it I am!

I use my phone to make and receive calls ....Luddite I know !! but it`s still science fiction to me !!

Me too lol
The only functions on mine are text, (monochrome screen) and ring.
sister has the i phone and rhinks its pants, crap battery life aswell
i got the n95. love it but still gettimg used to it.
it does have fantastic 5 mp cam and 8gb memory and google maps and nokia maps etc etc
xx fem xx
You wont be able to get into chat with it as to go into chat you need to have the latest full version of Flash and I dont think there is a phone out there that can cope with it dunno

I had the N95 before I got the iphone...in fact I'm running two simultaneously at the moment as I've not got round to sorting contracts/numbers....hey ho!
Love the camera on the N95 - it was the reason I got it......just a bit slow on the shutter speed.
However..as I mostly carry my proper camera/camera's I thought I was OK to switch....but can't help feeling a tad flat/let down/disappointed.
I do have the new geocaching application.....which is great for paperless caching!
....and a Crash Bandicoot game.....
....and a handy notepad.......
.....and it does make calls! ......
Ha ha.....I did wonder.
Actually, I prefer it to some earlier phones for making calls. They just got too small. Couldn't reach from ear to gob. N95 was fine, this is fine too......I loved my N95......
I have both the iphone and the viewty at the mo. Bought the Viewty first and then Morb had an iphone and I preferred that, so I bought one and once my number has been ported I'll be selling the Viewty.
The two things I don't like about the iphone are;
Crap camera, I'm gutted to be losing the one off the viewty as it's excellent.
There's no stylus, I'm a bit of a whizz with the stylus on the Viewty and my fingers kind of "blob" on the iphone screen!
Otherwise .... I love the iphone. I had one as I work for my myself and it means I can access everything I want. Google mobile doesn't work on the Viewty mad
As for battery life, the argument is ... do you use it only as a phone? In which case the battery is pretty good biggrin If you use it as an ipod, to play games, surf the net or get email then yets the battery does only tend to last for a day! If I run my laptop on battery it only lasts about 2 hours and then I need to plug it in ... the iphone is still better.
I guess how well you rate the phone depends on what you actually do with it? I'm currently using social media a lot, twitter, linkedin, rss etc and all those things have applications on the iphone so I can get what I want immediately, the viewty just doesn't have the functionality for me.
I guess if you want a phone that does extras the Viewty is definitely the phone to get, if you want more functionality for surfing and web access the iphone is the one!

So does the Tomtom if you run it on battery only!
only had one Nokia before this, though was loathed to admit I rather liked it... cant remember the name now.
been fiddling this morning
then I had a play with the phone (n95) and have realised my mistake... it has memory... I don't!

I was toying with the idea of an iphone but it sounds too much like hard work confused
I've just upgraded mine ( finally got shot of that awful slide phone evil ) and went for the Motorola V8. The camera is shit ( 2Meg ) though I prefer to use my digi cam for pics anyway but the rest of it is fine. I'm used to the layout anyway as I used to have the V3.
I was thinking about the iPhone, but then remembered how much I totally loathe iTunes so I went for an HTC Diamond. The only downside with the Diamond is it's WinMo based so crashes every now n again, but I'm happy to live with that if I dont have to deal with iTunes. That said - Apple software "just works"
Have you looked at the HTC Dream / T-mobile G1? Android based, open source loveliness...
*Him*
I also went with the HTC touch diamond and I'm really happy with it on a Vodawotsit contract.
Good in built sat nav as well.
My 2p worth. :-)

Warning, long post coming up!!!
At the end of the day, it comes down to what general experience you want from the phone.
User interface, nothing comes close. I've had various S60 (nokia N series) phones and they've always left my with a feeling of dissapoinment...slow...clunky...freezy...
Sure the iPhone isn't perfect, but they've managed to provide a much better & advanced user experience in their first attempt than nokia/erricsson/motorola etc have in all their years of phone development combined - which bodes well for future software & hardware updates. At the very least they've made the other manufacturers sit up and have forced them into providing much better user interfaces.
Also expect *much* better third party applications than any other mobile platform because the development tools are wayyyyy more advanced than any of the other platforms (symbian=urgh, windows mobile=gui based, not fantastic, google android=java - java, come on guys???).
Apple have a common platform too, which is good for the end user, effectively once nokia/sony etc have released a phone, that is it (generally), barring bug fixes you're only going to get new features by updating to the next generation of phone. Apple have provided a version of the new V2 firmware (which shipped on the iPhone 3G) for the original iPhone, likewise when the next version of firmware comes out it will also be provided for original iPhone - this is consistent with their software update policy for their computers, when it was only in the last release that the finally deprecated a subset of previously compatible hardware (think 5 year old hardware).
While it's never going to satisfy every single potential buyer, it has enough of everything to satisfy the majority, it is however the best phone I've ever owned by a country mile and that's even given things that are missing at the moment!
Battery life has been substantially improved in the last software update a few weeks ago, I can quite easily get 4-5 hours of usage in addition to 2-3 days of standby - that's with 3G, Wifi, GPS and Bluetooth all enabled, disabling some of these will also increase battery life too.
Things that are missing:
- Bluetooth sync (cannot use bluetooth for contacts)
- SMS forwarding
- Cut and paste (will come)
- Flash (adobe have already ported flash to the iPhone, they need to convince apple it's a good thing though - however, mobile safari is in a league of its own)
It takes a little while to get used to the keyboard, but once you do it's bloody quick! You don't even have to be that accurate because it auto corrects words very well. The mobileme integration is very good too, there were a few teething problems but it works flawlessly now, it pushes contacts & calendars from my phone to my computer, this is a big thing for me.
If you get the chance, try to have an extended play with a N series phone and then with an iPhone and see what you think for yourself, it's hard to get an unbiased opinion from iPhone users or from the alternatives!
