I google....cant help it, its my first search engine i stop at too as opposed to any other.
Yep, Google is my friend!
I have to admit that it is usually my first port of call when I'm looking for information on anything.
yep google unless its something i know i know but have forgotten, then will drive myself mad until i remember it but wont google it
before t'internet we used to look in books. Google is just a library on your computer wink
first of all, before attempting to answer the question, can we just clarify:
way of life?
I think Ive heard the phrase.

Yeah !! An instant library of all the worlds information ......
But most of us only get the information that appears on the first page when we google and in a lot of cases the "first page" information is paid for in some way by somebody ....so most of the infomation that we receive from google is there because somebody paid for it to be there !!
never take the first answer you're given unless it really makes sense to. for the question you had in your OP the first link would probably give you what you want to know
go from page ten onwrads
Thats where the theorums are, and the squiggly diagrams
It's propper science

anyway, who is maggie fillbin?

I'm told I'm weird. After seeing all the tributes in peoples facebook updates the other day, I had to google Steven Gately.
And yes, I almost asked the op who this Michelle bird was.
But then it struck me- I didn't give a shit anyway. So I still don't know who this Michelle bird is- but I'm happy. wink

That was an example of me using google rather than having a conversation ...
I`m interested in this mostly because having recently started a website I still can`t fathom why certain searches bring my site up on page 2 of google , others make us appear on page 17 and other`s I haven`t yet had the patience to find out !!!
I don't know a huge lot about how google gets it's information from except that it uses a lot (and I mean a lot  ) of automated programs usually called "Google bots", they basically collate all the information on a particular site and that information gets processed. The reason why your site is on page one on some searches and on later pages on others depends I suppose on how many "Hits" you get, and what those hits are....
For example, if you was to run a newsgroup and ran a story on say for arguements sake (and I know you probably wouldn't in real life lol but bear with me) Jordan, you could expect to get a lot of hits as despite her being a twit (and that's the polite way of describing her rolleyes ), a lot of people want to know all about that piece of news..... however, if you run a story on that Hadron collider in Switzerland, and you could expect less. Put simply, the more a site is used, the higher up the google ratings it goes.
There are programs that monitor the popularity (as in hits and average traffic etc), but I can't remember any of them
I think that makes sense (well, in my head it did  )
so, if you were to call your company:
Jordan tits-out cum jiz sex bang accountancy, you'd get lots of hits?

Er....possibly
lol
I automatically ignore the "sponsored links"- the first few at the top of the page, and the ads on the right.
If there's something I actually need to know, I'll collate info from several different sites.
Hits do equate to the number of people visiting your site.
Things such as meta tags and also links to other sites can also help improve your Google ratings.......I think confused

But do "hits" equate to people actually visiting the site or the amount of times something on our site is googled ??
And funnily enough ...it`s an equestrian site so the Jordan factor isn`t the furthest thing from my mind considering the new Katie Price clothing range !!! rolleyes

I think it's mainly how many times a site is visited, but I'm not 100% sure. I'll just check er....google :giggle:
I haven't had chance to filter any relevant information from the link below, but it seems to at least have some answers in it - be warned though, a lot of the content is Geek Central - it was making my head hurt at one point  ....I'll have to try and read it all tomorrow - Am too tired to comprehend it all at the moment lol

That makes sense - if you link to a site that is already popular, you are far more likely to get people visiting your site, even if it's an idle looky see....
Look up "higher site rankings" - there are quite a few user friendly sites for info out there...if you know what to, erm, google. lol
whatever happened to Jeeves?
poor fellow

I only occasionally use Google because I prefer to use Copernic Agent, which is a free piece of software that collates the answers from several search engines. I also use Wikipedia quite a lot too.

And that statement and many others like is a huge reflection on society and how it gets it's information....before if someone asked what something meant the response would be "look it up in a dictionary/encyclopedia", no most people just say "google it"
I must admit I use Google a lot more than I realised  rolleyes

I haven't used Copernic agent or heard of it (I'll have to have a look at it), and although I use Wiki a lot too, because nearly anyone can add to it, I do tend to take a lot of information on there with a pinch of salt lol
