Is it selfishness or ignorance?

I was shocked to watch a program last night on the amount of food this country wastes while there are staving people in the world.
This program was based on this report:

Quotes from the report:
It works out at €600 worth of wasted food per year for every adult, a staggering sum that would go a long way towards feeding the starving people in the world.
The uk wastes an estimated £20 billion worth of food a year. This figure is based on statistics from the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
There was a lady on the programme that bought a whole chicken to feed her and two small children. She used around 6 slices of breast meat and just threw the rest of the chicken in the bin.
I was in total shock and stunned to see such wastage.
What do others think?
Is it pure selfishness that people throw away food in this country, because people buy what they want and not what they need?
I do believe a lot of waste comes down to a high proportion of people not having the cooking ability.
What are your views?
Would you think more about what you buy in future?
I always say women should swallow and not spit as its such a waste .. nice pussy minx lol
It's just the next ploy by this government to detract the public from the bigger issues. Somewhere down the line a new tax will spring up from this.
Everyone will have to start having their cake and eating it I guess.

Lost I like your posts as you know and you normally always make sense! lol
But I thought long and hard on this and must say it doesn't seem to me to be a ploy on Tax.
I have read the whole link, the tips make sence to me.
I know of a lot of people that would waste food readily. I have friends that I have seen do this and on occassions I myself have to. I tend not to now and havent for a while due to the cost of shopping these days and making our money stretch further. I worked for a large chain of supermarket for 18 years you should have seen the waste there on a daily basis. I do think wasting food is a crime.
I do think if people read the tips at the bottom of the link it is common sense to some but not to others.
I would like others views on it.

Agreed
I throw quite a lot of food away. Mainly due to the fact i live alone now and have not got used to feeding myself or organising what i need and what i want. One problem is there doesnt seem to be a lot available in supermarkets for one other than procesed stuff which i try and avoid.

Minxy I spend roughly £100 a week on food and I do chuck some out that has gone past its sell by date. I dont like to see food wasted only because I have paid hard earned money for it, not because of any other reason.
We can all make comments about world food matters but it will always be with us. Of course I feel sorry for people that are hungry but we just get on with our own lives and occasionaly watch the news and say its awful.
If this lady has paid her money for this chicken who are we to critisise her bacause she chucks a lot of it away? I wont as we are all guilty of it at some point. Feeding the world did not work long term when we had all that money raised by Live aid, it worked short term only.
I dont know the answers Minx as to how we can help others, but I feel this country has enough of its own problems, and believe me there are thousands of kids out there in this country who do not eat proper food through lack of money in their houses. That is a terrible thing that is happening on a daily basis in the UK up and down the country. Answers? Even I dont know any Minx.
As a single person who doesn't enjoy food or the cooking of it I tend to eat packaged stuff... and herein lies the point of the wastage.
Why the hell do supermarkets insist on thinking that anyone who buys packaged food is either a couple (2 portions) or a family (up to 8+ portions)?
Quite simply, I waste food (and money) because there is very little available that comes in single portions, or in portions that are small enough to not have to eat every bloody meal for 3 or 4 days. If I don't eat them in time after opening they go off and as such get thrown away.
I'm pretty bloody sure that I'm not the only single person in the same boat, so it's highly likely that an awful lot of food is wasted in this way.
I'm with you on this one Peanut... I live on my own, and hate wasting food, but can only seem to get larger amounts of items.. it drives me crazy. I tend to cook for me, my other half and my blind friend now, so nothing gets wasted.. I don't even waste cat food.. if my cats don't eat it.. it goes out for the hedgehogs at night and the dishes are always clean the next morning....
When my hubby died, there was some days when I didn't have enough money to eat, and on rubbish day seeing the amount of wasted food in my area used to really upset me....
I compost anything I don't use.. then it goes straight back into my garden.. I grow my own fruit and veg now...

very little food gets wasted in this house a chicken is stripped to the bare bones and froze/made into other meals - the bones get fed to the dog (i no its not advised but its a personal choice) any leftovers from the plates gets put in the dog bowl for its tea i cook the amount we need, if i buy lamb shanks the dog gets the bones, I buy the value big packs of bacon once home these get seperated into portions of 4 rashers and froze only using the amount we need, i split loafs of bread in half before i freeze them again less chance of the bread going mouldy/dry before you use it. :lol2:
If i have an abundance of veg/fruit going to waste (i grow vegs as does deks parents) it gets made into soup/puree and froze in 1 serving portions (a sandwich bag placed inside a mug and filled with soup is a good single serving i find and easy to reheat) the puree getting used on icecream/rice pudding etc.
If you have the time and are single above tips save time and money in the long run, basically everything can get devided up and froze in single serving or enough to feed however many you feed
I have more of a problem with packaging waste which even though i recycle everything i can you really see how much your throwing away
i call it wag the dog..as in the movie
the government is trying very hard to divert its problems by blaming us for throwing food away yet gordon brown had 7 course meal while in a meeting in japan this week.
families are willing to have home made food occasionally but due to the financial crisis we are either forced to do long hours to make ends meet,a very limited amout of time is left to prepare food thus we even spend more on junk food or chippy.
now the govt want to discourage supermarkets for promoting buy 1 get 1 free, claiming its the reason why we throw food away
have you heard of the new car tax increase in the name of evironment?how about the 2p increase on fuel in october08'
its a strategy to divert attention to govt short falls
I know this is moving on from your original point minx but I think I need to get this off my chest and i don't want to start a new thread on it so i'll put it in yours because i think you'll be cool about it.
I am seriously worried about the possibility of a prolonged recession in this as well as other countries. Mainly this one because i'm in it with my Mrs and kids. I feel that things are becoming a little dodgy and that we are coming into what economically can be described as akin to the seventies.
I am no aficienado of the socio/economic and political areas, though i'm also not totally unaware. i believe. This time around in this country we do not have the means of buying or selling ourselves out of trouble. The country owns nothing of value any more no water, gas, electric, steel, coal, transportation, telecommunications. Most of the building societies are now banks and share owned, and last but not least most of our councils housing stocks are non-existent anymore, being either sold off to the tenants or too Housing associations well out of any sort of government ownership.
I'm not saying how or what was/has been done is wrong or hasn't been necessary. In some cases i think it has. What I am worried about is that this recession is going to be long and drawn out especially with the emergence of the 'new superpower economies' of places such as China making the possibility of Europe becoming a economic back water. (industrial production wise there is a strong case that we are already a backwater)
I wonder if in the last thirty years we haven't literally sold ourselves down the river?
Sorry Minx I got a bit carried away
Actually, I'm just as worried as Lost on this one. Feeding the world's growing population is only going to get harder, and I think the UK is heading for a really tough time ahead.
Anyway, food wastage. I hate it. We hardly throw anything away, I'm really good with judging portion sizes, but anything left over goes to the dog. I can see how it would be frustrating for a single though. confused

I think it would be a good idea to start a thread on this subject lost.
Of course I will only observe the replies.
i live alone.....and no I don't waste alot. The one thing I do...is shop every day. I do buy things for the frezzer etc etc..but generally I go to my Local tesco on my way home and buy things that day...that I want to eat for my tea....not difficult..and sometimes cheaper..as sell by date is a couple of days away..and they mark price down.
I spend about £25 - £30 max a week on food for 2.5 of us. I can't afford to waste anything. I get stuff I can use, save gas/electric by cooking enough rice/pasta/mince etc for a couple of days and reheat it.
The idea of throwing away perfectly good food cos someone 'doesn't like' leftovers or doesn't know what to do with them is astonishing. I bet they don't do it with alcohol LOL.
Not having to think about the money they spend could be one factor, ignorance of food's decay lifecycle could be another. But I can't feel that either of those is a valid excuse anyway.
I know we can't send leftovers to starving people - that would be ridiculous, but that doesn't excuse wasting it. If we care about starving people - perhaps we should buy less, waste less and send the saved money to Oxfam etc.
I like my food - too much to be honest - and the idea of throwing stuff away perfectly good stuff I can eat is beyond my understanding.
If anyone would like to pick up ideas for using leftovers, storing finished dishes in the freezer etc etc try Googling the Women's Institute booklist and see what they have to offer. Lots of excellent ideas.

One way to deal with it might be to make sure you get fresh meals (rather than frozen ones). Then scoop out what you want to eat onto a plate/dish, nuke it and eat it and slip the half-empty package into a plastic bag and pop it in the freezer.
It won't work for meals with different sections, but lasagna, cauli-cheese etc would work fine.
xx
maybe the reason some people waste food is because its in plentiful supply here,(wonder if the arabs moan if they spill any petrol (at 12p per litre) and with busy lifestyles we may only do 1 big shop per week so what looks tempting on your shopping day you don't fancy eating it during that week, 2 for 1 bargains look tempting to most but if its chocolate thats on offer it gets eaten same week (so maybe we put a pound on in weight)but if you get 2 fresh products for price of 1 to eat in same week maybe the free 1 gets thrown away.
i had vision of the internet 30 years ago and reckon in maybe 30 years time when you do your shopping all weights will be monitored on your till receipt and consequently "they" will know what wasteage (packaging etc) there should be and your bins will be weighed b4 being emptied and a tax will be made to you if you go over that weight. watch this

 Tan! You'd fit right in here in our house!!
Like yesterday, lots of vegetables that we'd used some of and were at risk of being wasted, in a big pot, stock cube, water, some chopped up rashers of bacon, boil it, puree it, great soup for a cold (July :shocksmile day! And some of that got frozen so I can eat it next week too...
I think it comes from being part of a big family and having parents who remember rationing. We have always been encouraged to be creative with leftovers. Just makes sense to me. Unfortunately, not to everyone.

Didn't Gordon Brown remind us of how much food we waste just before he sat down to his 6 course lunch which itself was just a warm up for his 8 course dinner along with all the other delegates mad
Feeding people will get a lot more expensive as well as a lot of what was once arable land is given over to growing crops for bio fuels meaning we then have to import more and more food that we could grow here...

Lost I have no problem with you posting that here, I feel the same as 777 it could do with a new thread as I feel the points that you have raised will get lost in this thread.
Also you mentioned the 70's..Don't forget the 90's interest rates at a all time high of 15%.
I think this time more people will be hit a lot harder with the way we live in a credit driven society.
We will be in a offical recession in another few months, I think a lot of people are blinkered to this fact.
I feel blessed that we learnt our lesson in the 90's and have no credit.
And never wish to go down that path again.
I would like to say a lot more on this but haven't the time just now will come back to this.
Hubby also who never replies to threads has something to say to.
But just to let you know we both totally agree with you.
Great post Lost!
