It might be that people have a problem with people who are fat, and yes, being overweight is maybe a choice thing in most cases, but by no means all and certainly not as clear cut as simple choice. However so is following a specific religion a choice and yet being anti one of those is not allowed.
What people think and say are two distinct things and rightly so. Although, I have always believed that those subjecting others to abuse for being overweight is just another way for ignorant, arrogant, socially deficient bigots to exercise there disgusting, foetid, pathetic, sad little minds on hurting others other than thinking about the deficiencies in decency going on in their own sad little lives.
I'm overweight so I know I'm speaking defensively and that will provide those engaged in the argument against allowing those who are fat to have a slander and insult free existence to say "Ah of course Lost would say that then, the fat bastard..."

There are far more jobs in this world that anyone can do other than being a fireman or in a sports team (your examples), we know certain jobs carry certain criteria, we may be overweight but we`re not stupid.
The job I do is very physical and I run the department I work in and I would not ask anyone to do anything I cannot do for myself, so please don`t stereotype everyone you see as obese or overweight because some of us are worth knowing and most of us are damned good at our jobs.
On a serious note I find it very hard to understand the fact that just because I`m overweight I`m deemed useless and unattractive and not worth knowing, well I`ll tell all of my friends and past lovers that they made a mistake in meeting and liking me because obviously all the guys in the world want a size 10 super model, how dare they like anything other wise.

Interestingly, being about 4 stone overweight has absolutely effect on my being able to do my job. Being unable to spell, use grammar correctly or know where to put a full stop (or not caring) would.
On the physical attractiveness thing - if you sense from someone's profile text or picture that they do not fall within your preferred range; simply don't ask for a meet, or refuse the meet offered. Although I really can't see why it would stop a person being an enjoyable chat or forum friend.
But the words a person uses to describe themselves is their choice. Again, if you don't like/believe them or wouldn't use the same words yourself - tough. What a dull, miserable, limited language we would have if there were only one word for everything.
