Some of the things I didn't expect to see in my lifetime The Berlin Wall coming down Peace in Northern Ireland (pretty much) Britain given to the EU by our politicians Prince Charles crowned King (winning on that one so far) Manchester City winning silverware England winning the World Cup for the 2nd time Britain daft enough to host the Olympic games The USA allowing a 2nd attack on the Twin Towers Saddam Hussein hung Razor Blades costing more than mobile phones Colonel Gaddafi ousted by his own people Mother Teresa's death being 2nd page news to someone else dying Russia releasing all it's states to become independant Nations again Sherbet Fountains being forced into plastic tubes instead of cardboard ones Britain giving up on it's Navy
we've all heard it, "Kirk to Enterprise", on that little gadget he kept on his person..and at the time we thought wouldn't it be great if you could speak to someone elsewhere on a little pocket sized gadget with no cables attached....science fiction eh?
Decimalisation. ITA - one of the worst experiments inflicted on the schoolchildren of the time. Colour telly (in our house anyway). Most of the Cold War. The Falklands invasion and reclamation. The end of the Apollo missions. (and many years of sadness on my part that I would never go into space) The start (and end) of the shuttle missions. A US shuttle being whizzed off at short notice to rescue Russians from their space station. You youngsters have NO idea how significant that was. The end of the Grammar school system. Bloody Thatcher and Sodding Scargill. Computing - all of it. On street 'forensic' tests from the breathaliser to drug identification to ANPR cameras.
moving onto predictions .............. before i die: there will be a foodstuff in a form in which both humans and animals will eat. and prepare at the same time to save on the washing up. real food will be an expensive and rare thing. children will run global corporations, for a few years until they grow up. medicines will be created which taken once will last a lifetime. you will be able to choose how they control your thoughts and feelings. want to get through a life of poverty and still feel happy? take the pill now. war will be fought in desolate areas and become a sport, a bit like a chess ladder.
Quote by foxylady2209 Decimalisation. ITA - one of the worst experiments inflicted on the schoolchildren of the time. (I found that one quite easy to get a grip of but still struggle with pints/litres etc) Colour telly (in our house anyway). and still costing the same or less as the day the first TV was made available (in relation to its cost and a weeks wages then and now Most of the Cold War. There were times that the cold war made me shiver (cuba crisis for eg) The Falklands invasion and reclamation. Just as "The Empire Strikes Back" did it's rounds at the cinema The end of the Apollo missions. (and many years of sadness on my part that I would never go into space) Getting into space ultra important, we got the internet and sat nav and a bit more, but I can't help wonder why we didn't spend the billions it takes to look at Jupiter and Mars in researching the oceans of our own planet where we know the resources we need are located but as yet inaccessible The start (and end) of the shuttle missions. A US shuttle being whizzed off at short notice to rescue Russians from their space station. You youngsters have NO idea how significant that was. Shame they didn't accept the same assistance for the crew of the Kursk The end of the Grammar school system. Failed 11+ non applicable Bloody Thatcher and Sodding Scargill. Loved Thatcher for her stance against the unions and europe felt Scargill did a good job until like Thatcher he became power crazy Computing - all of it. Still waiting for them to invent the pc that does what I want it to do not what I tell it to do  On street 'forensic' tests from the breathaliser to drug identification to ANPR cameras.
The problem with ITA is that it was very easy. But it wasn't English. And when children were then moved onto proper English they really struggled. But they weren't expected to struggle cos ITA was supposed to be a step on the way. It didn't help mopst kids and it hindered a few very badly. English is full of variation - loads of spelling options. Pretending they didn't exist and then throwing the kids into reading real English was a failure.
and ................ I think I am probably one of very few people who have been lucky enough to visit the Falkland Islands, chat to the penquins but never visit Port Stanley though from what I have seen of the Islands I didn't miss much oh and I asked one of the penquins if he had seen Pingy but he just said "what does he look like" Predictions : I believe space travel on a commercial basis will become more popular and cheaper but never cheap and it will in % terms be a lucky few who get to experience it. Swinging will never be seen on "Britains got Talent" but will appear in a number of reality shows possibly even "Big Bi Brother" and "Swap or No Swap" (Hosted by Sir Noel Edmunds)
