I never made any reference to the existance or otherwise of a God in any form. I only mentioned religion.

Point taken Steve..I wasn't bought up as anything and have never been beliefs - like I said I've said, with nothing to confirm it,they are just what I feel in my highly flawed human heart.
There are at least two alternatives to religion - science and magic.
Well, that's if you're an anthropologist, anyway.
Religion and God, are they connected, has anyone actually got it right? Lead by example Jesus said, don't ram your faith down others throats, be good, and live a good life and others will see you and want the same. Somewhere down the line we ended with televangelism and catholics and protestants blowing each other up banghead
I am religious, I have faith, I noticed a number of people were offering thoughts and prayers for poor Calista in her time of need, I assume these people have some religious feelings. I never ram my faith down anyones throat I hope, or draw attention to it. Can a Christian be a 'swinger', sorry not finished figuring that one out yet...
Wars, My Faith is better than your faith, all this is nothing like Jesus preached (in the case of my religion). To take point with the comment 'All religions believe they are the right one' I know a number of faiths preach tolerance of all religion, some even have martyrs who died protecting the rights of other religious groups, not there own. Really working for man, not their religion. (I think it was the Seeks, and I doubt I spelled that right)
There are some horrific practises in the world, female circumcision as mentioned by Debs, the putting down of women as practised by some Muslim groups, the actions of some Jews re Palestinians, the Catholic and Protestant war in Ireland. In the end though this is not actually the word of the religion, it is man's inhumanity to man. For every religious (or otherwise) extremist there are thousands of quiet believers who would not allow or condone the actions.
In the end it only takes one person to destroy a persons faith, in the case of the priest who denied a funeral as 'they were not a regular church goer' it was him. Passing up years of faith and belief in a second. The bible mentions people who destroy someones faith, I think it goes along the lines of 'it would be better if a large millstone were tied to them and they dropped themselves in the ocean' or don't do it in simple terms.
Should the non believers have something to hold on to, my belief says they should. I may not think they are right as I have my beliefs, but it is for everyman to make there own choices, that was what we got in this world, free will. So I for one will continue to be myself and do my bit to try and make the world a better place. I have faith, there is a religion linked to my faith, for me it is the right way, I hope everyone can find their right way, whatever it is...
"But to say that God is Dead presupposes that at some time he was alive"
Roy Harper "God is Dead" HQ 1975
I'm just quoting Roy H!When you put the "God is Dead" quote on this thread it just reminded me of the song..x
In fact its called "The Spirit Lives".When it came out in 1875 I had more hair than Reese!
The last line is a jokey cop out but it does make for interesting reading re this thread!:
Roy Spirit
Where once were men are now but sheep,a fiction and far cry
from Planet Earths proud animal who would be you and I
Alas our forebears drank the cup of poisoned alibi
and made excuses far and wide
and made God in the sky..
This boogaloos now round the World
bad trips for everyone
no more the man of paradise
or the Celt of Albion
They queue like burning moths to spread the all-time vicious lie
_- You Christians destroyed our tribe
I fight you til I die..
And you can cut me down
for what I've said
but goodness lives where God is Dead..
The history of religion
is the history of the state
insestuous exploiters of a catologue of hate
The man of peace was over-run by armies of the Lord
who signed their names to any war
and sang to praise the sword..
The mission heads for outer space
the voices ring and swell
with aeons of self righteousness
the senseless echoes knell
the words get much more meaningless
even plainer to tell
that those who would pronounce this God
are those that made this hell..
And you can cut me down
for what I've said
but goodness lives where God is Dead..
Love is the great triumph over Christianity
She made a fool of silly priests
She mocked authority
She filled her bed with happiness
She gripped his loins for joy
And felt ecstatic agonies
And screamed the sweetest cry
Her children are the legacy of failure to be chained
An everlasting mutiny of flowers when it rained
They rise out of oppression and they speak with one accord
The Fountain Breathes
The Spirit Lives
The Future Rests Assured..
And to say that God is Dead presupposes that at sometime he was alive
OOOO what a young fool I am
Told you the last line kinda blew it!
I don't think religion is a problem at all; it's people you have to worry about. I am not religious, either, and I am not here to defend it. People can and will fight over anything. Even love! People kill over it; as they do over money, nationalism, politics and personal ambition.
If there is conflict within and between religions it is because there is conflict within and between us. I think before we can expect to see peace in the world, we need to see peace within ourselves. Until we do, we'll always find something to fight over.
