hmmm, i didnt realise SP2 FW was so good, i might look into that.
I tend to block outgoing if i dont want that software going out to the net, unless i misunderstand you.

Norton even does one, but i wouldn't personally use that. Dont know why just wouldnt

I've had some bad experiences with Norton stuff and to my mind it's far to invasive. Seems to enjoy taking all the control away from the user. Not a problem until you want to do something out of the ordinary and then mad
Pretty good with virus solutions though. smile

So is this going to be a problem for domestic use guys?

Probably not. There's a risk that problems could send information that you don't want them to (spyware), but Spybot will take care of that.

So as I'm on dial up and not using a firewall, I'd be pretty much in the same position as I am now?
My biggest concern (especially with P2P) is someone knicking my bandwidth or gaining open access to my por...... redface .........I mean my computer. surprisedops: lol
I just wanna keep people out of areas I don't want them in or taking a free ride with my bandwidth (I'm not dreaming am I? It is possible for an outsider to steal my bandwidth isn't it?)

Better, if you enable the XP firewall smile

Probably not, unless you're using a wireless network, in which case, yes, it's fairly easy without precautions sad
The worrying bit, unprotected, is people having a rummage around in your files, or 'malware' (viruses, spyware, trojans) getting in and causing damage.

Im going to disagree with others on here who have said that the router is not a good option though, as I have MANY clients that are using NAT as a cheap, easy and effective firewall regardless of whether they have just one PC or not.

It's a great option, especially if you may want to extend a network at a later date, but it's a bit of a waste of money if Tesco are 'giving' you a USB modem and you have the software solutions at your fingertips.
o/t - While we've got this gathering of SH IT* bods - can anybody cast light on why I've lost sound in Flash player confused It's not soundcard or drivers (changed and updated respectively) and everything else appears to work ok.
* not an acronym to adopt !!
Reinstalled??
How about software conflict?
When did it stop working and what did you do on that day?
They're the first three i would ask myself
My thoughts too confused

Tried it

Seems likeliest, but I'm buggered if I can work out what with ? Any thoughts ?

Quite a while, and nothing untoward.
Very odd. And a little annoying. I like stupid flash animations ;)
you sure its flash not say IE?
what browser do you use?
have you tried another to make sure it works, how about standalone flash?
There is a bug with SP2 and flash, if you are not running directX 9c
Before you say its installed with part of SP2, yes it IS, but there is a bug in SP2 that it will not install Direct x 9C from the download if it detects you already have version 9. (I think this has now been fixed)
that is worth a try.. failing that, check your event log to see if the application is logging an error, if it is post it here and I will find the solution for you!.

A WHOLE thread of techno-shite (tmME2004)!!!!
OK - in plain english I have a: BT Voyager 2000 Wireless ADSL modem (router) which has been configured to not be visible to anything else (courtesy of the lovely Nallers) so only my laptop can see it. Something to do with MAC numbers??????? The other night he found two other wireless networks registering in the area of my house but mine didn't show at all. As FredFlintstone put it 'my bubble is secure'.
SP2 is on now as well - it has created a couple of minor irratants to my desktop use but nothing that a bamboozled Jags or an IT literate Nallers can't cope with.
Now every gadget I have talks to each other: PDA to desktop and laptop; laptop to desktop and PDA; mobile to PDA and desktop and laptop and desktop to hi-fi

It's all too much for me most times but I muddle through and shout 'HELP' loud enough when things don't work properly!!
Good luck easy - x xx

I have the same Router and I would be keen to become invisible too. Do you think Nailers would mind helping out a brain frazzled Lancs lass, Jags?

Course he would! He's coming round tonight to do some magic with my iPod and my car stereo so will ask him!! It'll be by PM or msn though.
OK?
:P
Perfect - msn details in PM Jags
Thank you!

:laughabove:
lol............. rotflmao :rotflmao:
So how did my attempt to install the service pack go?........
Not flucking well. mad
My computer used to have a nast habit of dying very intermittantly. I don't mean shutting down, I mean just going completely dead and then powering up from the start again (no shutting down messages. It's just like someone pulled the plug).
Anyway it's not done this for about 3 months, ever since I had a fiddle with the connections at the back. cool I thought all solved :smug:
Only tonight it decides to do it as I'm 3/4 of the way through the installation. evil   It powers back up and then tells me I need to remove SP2, which I do. the fecker then restarts and shows me the smallest desktop I've seen in a long time, along with lots of baloons telling me that such and such has been found and this has been found (new hardware). :taz:
So I do a system restore to a point I created on Sunday and I'm back to normal(ish) again now.
I did some bloody praying to the great god of sillicon asking for the system restore point to work. I was desperate, so I promised all kinds of things....... :uhoh: :eeek:
All I have to do now is to convince Countess to put on this white robe and lay on the big stone table blindfolded, while I pay my debt. sad
Any ideas how I'm going to do that? dunno
I'm going to log off and have another go at installing SP2. If I'm not back in 2 hours, please send AC and CA to look for me
Definately NOT Neil. :x

I'm not suprised, they are still on smoke signals up there.

Definitely, seldom use IE, but when I do I have the same problem as in Firefox. It remains a problem in stand alone use
LoOL - I'm just trying that now
Thanks guys smile

Carrier pigeons will revolutionise the internet, testing of the CPIP protocol has already begun

Easy - I think your power supply is fubared sad
Easy repair in a desktop (note which wire goes where, remove, replace) and not ruinous.

Yeah I've got a spare PSU from a PC we binned at work. Just hope it's the correct power rating now. biggrin thanks for the help.
Just as an update guys I installed SP2 eventually *kicks computer* mad and everything seems to be working as it should. biggrin
I've not noticed it running any slower than previously and all I've seen so far is the pop-up blocker stop my pop-up to tell me I've got a new PM :x but that's sorted now.
Quick Q. Does the XP firewall come on at full strength (ie relatively port-less) as I tried using MSN last night and had absolutely no problems at all... confused I thought I would have at least had a pop-up asking me if it was OK for this program to access the net. :?
(the firewalls definately switched on.....I checked. lol rolleyes )
Next stop broadband and the drivers that come with the modem. :eeek:
Thanks again to everyone who helped and offered an opinion, it was very much appreciated.
  drinkies
MSN is included on the exceptions list automatically, as are the other messengers.
If you go to control panel > network connections and right click your connections name,
then click 'Properties' in the pop-up,
then 'Advanced' tab in the next pop-up ,
then the 'Settings' button,
then the 'Exceptions' tag
- you'll see which programmes are allowed unrestricted port access smile
You'll be pleased to know that if Tesco supply the Speedtouch modem that looks like a giant mouse (and I think they still do) the install is very seldom problematic.

cool I thought it would be a lot more in-depth when it came to setting it up than that. I think I'll go and have it tested and see how vulnerable I am. wink

Excllent. I guess I might need to invest in a hub now though. sad I've got my printer and my camera lead in the 2 USB sockets at the back. I don't lik useing the sockets at the front 'cos my PCs low down and it's very easy to kick the lead out. rolleyes lol
Aye, that's the one smile
And I know exactly what you mean - why the heck do they put them at toe level ???
Bizzarely B&Q sells decent cheap 4 port hubs confused £7-99 iirc
Sorry to drag this up again, but I've got a few questions
I've got and from reading the tech sheet it looks like it's ready for 1G (PC133) memory per slot so 512K should be fine. I've currently got 2 boards fitted, a 128 and a 256. I've switched the 256 into the primary slot (I think) anyway it seems to have made a difference to the performance when playing back mPegs so it must have done something.
What I don't seem to be able to get my head round what the effects are of mixing sizes of memory. Does it add together or does it do something else 'cos I'm sure I've read somewhere that it's limited to the larger memory. dunno Well whatever happens I guess that 512K will speed the little devil up no end. biggrin
And what's the deal with PC2300 etc are these just faster processor speeds that fit into the same sockets as PC133 and are they retro-fitable to PC133.
Jon-Jon I couldn't find the 4 way hubs in B&Q, but I did come across one in Asda for £8-49 so not too bad.
Ta guys.
BTW I lurve BB and I've had no problems with the Tesco deal so far. :D
A bit late joining the thread I know... but I have a Netgear 834 wireless router/switch/firewall... and we have 4 laptops in the house all using Netgear WG511T wireless cards.
Everything works perfectly, and was a doddle to set up.
Also i'm on Bulldog 1Mb and it rocks!
