So as I'm on dial up and not using a firewall, I'd be pretty much in the same position as I am now?

(I'm not dreaming am I? It is possible for an outsider to steal my bandwidth isn't it?)

Im going to disagree with others on here who have said that the router is not a good option though, as I have MANY clients that are using NAT as a cheap, easy and effective firewall regardless of whether they have just one PC or not.

OK - in plain english I have a: BT Voyager 2000 Wireless ADSL modem (router) which has been configured to not be visible to anything else (courtesy of the lovely Nallers) so only my laptop can see it. Something to do with MAC numbers??????? The other night he found two other wireless networks registering in the area of my house but mine didn't show at all. As FredFlintstone put it 'my bubble is secure'.

MSN is included on the exceptions list automatically, as are the other messengers.
If you go to control panel > network connections and right click your connections name,
then click 'Properties' in the pop-up,
then 'Advanced' tab in the next pop-up ,
then the 'Settings' button,
then the 'Exceptions' tag
- you'll see which programmes are allowed unrestricted port access

You'll be pleased to know that if Tesco supply the Speedtouch modem that looks like a giant mouse (and I think they still do) the install is very seldom problematic.
