I need some help choosiing the color and pattern of carpet to lay.
This must be a cheap carpet, because i think to sell a house without carpet is a no no.

You need to avoid anything that a buyer might strongly object to, so nothing really bright, or heavily patterened. The good news is that plain coloured carpet is usually cheapest!
You might consider large rugs rather than carpets where possible, since wooden floors are 'in' and it means you don't have to pay for a fitter, and you can take them with you when you go! Try your local diy shop or Ikea for cheap rugs rather than a specialist carpet shop, the prices will be much better.

I picked up a handy tip from a friend of mine. Take in a little bag of dog hair with you to the carpet shop and try to match it up - saves on hoovering (

When I moved into my first student flat a bloke came round selling carpet - had a big bold (and strangely familiar) design on it. It was dirt cheap so we took it. And when I went to re-negotiate my overdraft I realised we had bought left over carpet from Barlclays Bank!

have to say......... i would go for carpet over wooden floor everytime!
if you are buying a house.... you are looking at how homely and inviting it looks... wooden floors always look cold to me to be honest... i think a carpet gives a sence of warmth and comfort.
you also need to have a think about the market your house might appeal to.
true,,, youngish people might have a hankering for wooden floors.... but a lot of older people seem to associate wooden flooring with poverty (as in their childhoods.. only the better off could afford carpets).
i would assume that you are going to go down the plain and neutral path with regards to the decor of your house,
if all the rooms are in cream/biege/magnolia/white.. as they often are when selling, then a biege/brown /dark blue carpet should look fine.
cream would look even better.. amnd more luxurious.. but unless you can garunteee it will stay imaculate untill you get a buyer.. then no! - as there is nothing more off putting than a grubby looking carpet.

If or when I will be looking for a new house I would look for the homely type of house, not he clinical type.
I will certainly be carpets, as nuch as I like wood. Carpet gives a more well lets say cuddly feel to the place.

also repaint of any walls with colours just slap up the old magnolia new buyers just like plain and clean
give the place a good spring clean and and invest in some good oil burners ....
nothing nicer than walking into a home smelling of lavender or similar

Maybe you should try a neutral colour but plain no pattern ie: beige, biscuit, oatmeal...

Yep. also try and keep the colour reasonably light as the lighter and airier it seems the larger the sense of space is. :wink: If you have to go with patterns small, simple and repetitive is also good as this will increse the feeling of space.
Trouble with light carpets though is that they show every bloody mark so some buyers don't like them. Ah sod it...... go buy sommat cheap. You can't please all the folks all the time. Best thing is to decide what type of person will be looking at your house and try to aim for those.
I agree with the scented candles/burners though. One house we viewed had a pot of freshly brewed coffee going. Normally this doesn't bother me, but I do have problems with drinking coffee and as I was also a bit nervous as well it made me feel really sick. Funnily enough the house didn't get a second viewing as it always reminded me of feeling sick.

The key is Neutral, Neutral, Neutral and when u have prospective buyers coming, get rid of any clutter, you know all those ornaments from Lanzarote that just collect dust!!
