As I am going to put my house on the market very soon.
I need some help choosiing the color and pattern of carpet to lay.
This must be a cheap carpet, because i think to sell a house without carpet is a no no.
What do you think confused:
Aren't wooden floors all the rage now?
Or am I out of touch with interior design?! smile
:P Steer clear of patterns is what I think
I don't like wooden floors, my kids would just skid everywhere and do themselves and the house damage.
Something plain , I'd say blue or beige carpet biggrin
Dawn :silly:
You need to avoid anything that a buyer might strongly object to, so nothing really bright, or heavily patterened. The good news is that plain coloured carpet is usually cheapest!
You might consider large rugs rather than carpets where possible, since wooden floors are 'in' and it means you don't have to pay for a fitter, and you can take them with you when you go! Try your local diy shop or Ikea for cheap rugs rather than a specialist carpet shop, the prices will be much better.
I used to like wooden floors until I actually lived somewhere that had one. I have a habbit of knocking the remote control onto the floor. Fine if you have a carpet, not fine if you have a wooden floor.

Been there done that.
The dog pissed on it a fucked it.
The washing machine leaked and fucked it.
A bucket of paint tipped over and fucked it.
Shall I go on.
So no wood flooring.
Bloody hell I am an idiot, why did I not think of this before.
I should ask Misschief if she could knit me a new carpet.
Wot a brilliant idea, my best idea for the day or maybe week.
biggrin lol :D  :D
I picked up a handy tip from a friend of mine. Take in a little bag of dog hair with you to the carpet shop and try to match it up - saves on hoovering ( redface although you think I'm kidding we did actually do this surprisedops: )
When I moved into my first student flat a bloke came round selling carpet - had a big bold (and strangely familiar) design on it. It was dirt cheap so we took it. And when I went to re-negotiate my overdraft I realised we had bought left over carpet from Barlclays Bank!
have to say......... i would go for carpet over wooden floor everytime!
if you are buying a house.... you are looking at how homely and inviting it looks... wooden floors always look cold to me to be honest... i think a carpet gives a sence of warmth and comfort.
you also need to have a think about the market your house might appeal to.
true,,, youngish people might have a hankering for wooden floors.... but a lot of older people seem to associate wooden flooring with poverty (as in their childhoods.. only the better off could afford carpets).
i would assume that you are going to go down the plain and neutral path with regards to the decor of your house,
if all the rooms are in cream/biege/magnolia/white.. as they often are when selling, then a biege/brown /dark blue carpet should look fine.
cream would look even better.. amnd more luxurious.. but unless you can garunteee it will stay imaculate untill you get a buyer.. then no! - as there is nothing more off putting than a grubby looking carpet.
hope this helps
x
I think it depends on what the rest of your decor is like. If you furniture is all trendy and appealing to younger people and if your prob gonna sell to a family but I'd say either a neutral carpet beige/cream or wood floor. Personaly I'd go for wood (which is what I'm doing at the mo) biggrin
Oy wbb you been in my house?(and I missed it)
Walls are magnolia, celings are white.
Wise words from wbb.
If or when I will be looking for a new house I would look for the homely type of house, not he clinical type.
I will certainly be carpets, as nuch as I like wood. Carpet gives a more well lets say cuddly feel to the place.
Thank you all for your input.
Now when I get my new place there will be a party.
Bring paint, wallpaper, tools and overalls.
Only tea will be supplyed as I don't want wiggley linesand lumpy plaster(coffee is horridso no coffee).
lol
me personally id go for plain neutral colours
then any one buying your home knows they dont have to fork out a fortune to recarpet it to go with there furniture
also repaint of any walls with colours just slap up the old magnolia new buyers just like plain and clean
give the place a good spring clean and and invest in some good oil burners ....
nothing nicer than walking into a home smelling of lavender or similar wink
Maybe you should try a neutral colour but plain no pattern ie: beige, biscuit, oatmeal...
That,s what the House Doctor would reccommend !!!! confused it,s supposed to make the room look more spacious, dunno

Yep. also try and keep the colour reasonably light as the lighter and airier it seems the larger the sense of space is. If you have to go with patterns small, simple and repetitive is also good as this will increse the feeling of space.
Trouble with light carpets though is that they show every bloody mark so some buyers don't like them. Ah sod it...... go buy sommat cheap. You can't please all the folks all the time. Best thing is to decide what type of person will be looking at your house and try to aim for those.
I agree with the scented candles/burners though. One house we viewed had a pot of freshly brewed coffee going. Normally this doesn't bother me, but I do have problems with drinking coffee and as I was also a bit nervous as well it made me feel really sick. Funnily enough the house didn't get a second viewing as it always reminded me of feeling sick. lol rolleyes
Good advice from all.
It has been taken onboard, and will be used soon.
Thanks
Allan
Does this mean you have seen the light & are moving up north?? :P

EEK
No no not never ever.
Its times like these we need to have Linda Barker on this forum.
Actually I'd like to have Linda Barker on this carpet you all keep going on about! redface
- even if it is the same carpet as the one they have in Barclays bank.
The key is Neutral, Neutral, Neutral and when u have prospective buyers coming, get rid of any clutter, you know all those ornaments from Lanzarote that just collect dust!!
Then bake bread, light candles etc lol!!
