dis·creet Audio pronunciation of "discreet" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (d-skrt)
adj.
1. Marked by, exercising, or showing prudence and wise self-restraint in speech and behavior; circumspect.
2. Free from ostentation or pretension; modest.

I just wanted to point out the difference in the words/spelling and meaning. They appear to be used inter-changeably everywhere and annoy the piss out of me. Worse than the floating apostrophe.
End of rant.

At least if you don't know your apostrophes you do avoid my pet hate in this passage, because you've used "loose" as it should be.
Almost everyone it seems insists on using "loose" when what they really mean is "lose".
I daren't read any more of this thread !!!!!!!!
Oh, where to start........

Can we not discuss 'loose passages' on a thread about grammar and word misuse, please?

Slap away Jammy - I just posted in response to a plank in another thread who was not only trying to give the Maudes a hard time but used the word incorrectly. I nobly refrained from commenting on that thread  but the horror was eating away at me and I HAD to post!
Anyway, it helps all the new people and shows them that the oldies CAN do a search.

The confusion between discrete and discreet is not helped by the illogical spelling of discretion. It looks like it should be related to discrete, but it isn't.
Now this is weird: I was taught that smooth is an adjective and the related verb is smoothe. However, according to every dictionary I can find, the verb and the adjective are both spelt the same way, i.e. smooth. For the last forty years I have believed that smoothe is a real word. Apparently it isn't, yet the third person singular is smoothes, not smooths. loon
What berk invented this language anyway? mad
Probably a foreigner, made us all look like idiots and now takes the piss from on high lol

I MAY have posted this before redface but there was a noted incident when some foreign language students were visiting London to see the sights. After struggling with the vagaries of this idiotic language for a couple of months they were horrified to read:
Macbeth pronounced success!
Ice - never heard of smoothe but am off now on the search. I may be some time.

I think I may have made an assumption based on pronunciation: Smoothes is pronounced like soothes rather than sooths, so I guess I figured smooth(e) should be spelt like soothe rather than sooth. I ought to know better than to think logically when trying to spell English words. :lol2:

Verbs that end in th or sh usually have es added when made 3rd person singular. The same for nouns when made plural.

I had a similar one, but i think it is part of the 'Wenglish' dictionary. dunno
I told my other half once that the cat had scrammed me. He didn't understand what I had said and it led to a debate on whether or not it was a real word in the context I'd used it.
I was so convinced that he was wrong that I promptly led him in to the nearest W.H Smith, took a dictionary off the shelf to prove my point and..............................................................had to eat humble pie!!!!
