we always put a couple of kisses (xx) to end our posts or texts, or even a hug (o) or 2.
But does anyone know how a x came to mean a kiss??? A o as a hug i can just about understand but a x for a kiss?
and while we're at it why isn't there a hug emoticon for chat

from
"As a symbol of a kiss on a letter, etc., it is recorded from 1765."
no mention of it's origin in this useage other being a greek symbol (letter).
As an aside whereas we pronounce the the letter 'x' as 'egs' I like it better in the spanish alphabet where it is pronounced 'akiss'. Which to these english ears sounds somewhat appropriate!

Now then, I must be back to front because an "x" as a kiss i understand quite naturally without eplanation. An "x" for Christ confuses me as does an "o" for a hug. "o" as a frenchy is understandable as well.
