labour saving devices!

a couple of years ago we decided to use a cleaner. It's simply that we're both out at work and hate clogging up the weekends. It's just two hours twice a week and it's bliss (and all the ironing is done too!). We therefore have more time to ourselves to do the things we enjoy most.
Now I'd love to use a gardener. Just to cut the grass, do a bit of weeding and odds and sods. Neither of these are expensive. Labour saving devices in the coldest sense.
Years ago we'd have a day washing clothes (according to my nan, it'd take all day too) and now we have auto's. A hoover (dyson, panasonic or whatever) was once considered a luxury. We have 'ping' meals instead of cooking for hours all to save the odd hour or two. We use a garage for sorting out our car instead of doing it ourselves, and who cleans their own windows these days?
My point is that a cleaner isn't a luxury, and I'm not sure if a gardner is too. So what labour saving devices do others have, and what would they want?
No more than I have! I'd hate having an outsider cleaning the house. I use microwave meals once in a blue moon- you can't beat home cooked food. We don't use a dishwasher or a tumble drier.
As for the gardener, we've been picking our own green beans almost daily for the last two weeks, I'm watching my first ever butternut squash grow with pride, and the pergola at the side of the house is weighed down with grapes. It's a pleasure, not a chore. wink

and i dont own a microwave dunno
cleaner? isnt that what kids are supposed to be for :dunno:

ah, that's real gardening. We have a veg patch and do that ourselves and that's not a chore (have you tried asparagus peas and if so what have we done wrong?). Yes that's certainly a pleasure and so rewarding. But cutting the grass? lol
And I couldn't live without a dishwasher!
When we were both earning, I had a cleaner, once a week.
She had a key, and every Sunday afternoon we left the house in a week's worth of "lived-in-ness" and came back to a spotless, lovely smelling, immaculate house.
It was the best tenner a week I ever spent. And if I start earning proper money again, I wouldn't hesitate to get another cleaning lady.
Oh bugger... I thought the thread was going to be about Alistair Campbell wink rolleyes

Not tried asparagus peas, but we do have fledgling asparagus! Don't find cutting the grass an issue either tbh. We have a friend who has two huge "gardens" (fields) in Normandy. He goes out there as often as he can and loves mowing the grass. He can trundle around on one of his (three!) ride on mowers, and forget about the cerebral stuff.
We have a microwave but rarely use it. We have a dishwasher and I couldn't be without it, in fact it's just been on the blink and I've been growling like you can't imagine!
A tumble dryer to me is a must, I'm so busy and the weather is naff anyway. In addition it's too warm to put the heating on to dry anything anyway! evil
I would love to have a cleaner to help out but couldn't afford one sad besides I think I'm the type of person I'd probably tidy up in preparation for the cleaner coming round anyway!... I'm quite finicky with my housework and I think I'd prefer to do it myself.
A gardener? yes defo would love one if I could afford it, I abs. hate gardening
I have a washing machine that dries and a microwave. Dont have a garden unfortunately. I cleaned the flat top to bottom last weekend and loved every minute, very satisfying. So no need for a gardener or cleaner. The only real labour saving device I do have is I get a woman in once a week for the frustration.....boink
Ex and me were in Currys checking out replacement fridges. I dragged him over to the dishwashers.
"We don't need a dishwasher" says him.
"WE don't" says me "But I DO!". Nuff said. Full time work is one thing, full time work PLUS every scrap of housework that needs doing - meaning I'm washing up at at night is BAD.
I got custody of the dishwasher, he got the bread-maker - damn him.
I can't afford to run the microwave, but I use the dishwasher - full and shortest run - but I do use it.
Personally I would LOVE a cleaner - just do run the hoover through and wash down the wet areas. It would be heaven - but I really can't justify the cost. I am the gardener and Vills is a demon with a digging fork.
I certainly don't begrudge anyone having a cleaner - it employs and pays someone after all - and it's always good to keep money moving in the economy.
