Hiya,
I was just reading up on the "coil", to me it sounds like the perfect alternative to the pill. i always put weight on when i go back on the pill and iv tried every one going!!
Only thing is i mentioned it to my mum and she went off on one on how there not as concetreptive as the pill? And how if im not "big enough" it will hurt nathan.
Does anyone have it fitted and if so have you had any problems with it. I'v got an appointment soon with the clinic to see about it but dont want to waste any time if any one on here can give me a hand.
I look forward to hearing from you...thanx
I've had mine in for over 5 years. Never had a problem. Slightly heavier periods than before but nothing I can't handle. Tool says he can't feel it and I've never had anyone else comment that they can.
As far as safety goes, my doctor told me it has only slightly less reliability than sterilisation! I've not got pregnant yet - and I've had a lot of sex in the time I've had it in! (Obviously only unprotected sex with Tool, don't want to start another bareback thread!)
Don't know if you've had children but if not the only problem might be that some dr's are unwilling to put a coil in someone who hasn't had children.
I've used the coil since after my first son.
The coil is great. I had no problems with it at all. They recommend you gently tug the strings every so often to keep it in place. I never did. Still no problem. The only thing I did find is that my 3 day period became a 7 day period. So I don't use it anymore.
And as it's fitted into the uterus the bloke doesn't feel it.
A bit of useless information: The coil was fashioned after the old Arab remedy of putting a stone into the female camels womb during long treks to avoid pregnancy.

A mate of mine has used a coil as her method of contraception in her monogamous relationship. When she gets a new one fitted, apparently her partner can feel it, until the wires soften.
Here's some info as well...
Wow, what a fact!!
So, as far as your concerned no babies!!?? I knew my Mum would just be over exchagerting(how the hell do you spell it).
What i read did seem pretty straight forward and it explains that it now has the same contraceptive rate as the mini pill.
No i havent had childeren but as far as i understand the clinic that im attending dont seem to fussed. I'm not really bothered about the period issue, before i went on the pill they were prety long andheavy so shouldnt be too different.
Thanx once again.
any any more points of view would be great. Would just like to see that it is as good and safe as the dr's say
I have the marina coil fitted, have had it a few years now and havent had any problems at all. The best bit about the marina is it stops periods, and of course you cant forget to take it.
O rite, so the marina is differnt to the regular one then?
I didnt know they could stop your periods too. DO they hormone thingys in them?Thats what my problem with the pill is you see.
I never knew theere were so many kinds!
I had the Mirena Coil fitted in Decemeber .. it fucking hurt to the point i almost passed out and I've had two large children and a cervical reconstruction with one!!!
I had mine fitted as I have abnormally heavy periods and it's supposed to lighten/stop them
Since December I bled almost constanly until February, my periods are lighter but only because instead of lasting the orignal four days the now last almost 14 and aren't so much heavy but constant.
Hubby can't feel the "tails" but maybe that's because sex has been virtually impossible mad for a while and my period is so fecking long now!
Would I recommned it dunno research the Depo injection first.

I just checked that link out from up abit!! It sems there are two types a IUD and a IUs. The IUD doesnt relase hormones just copper and the other,IUS,maina, releases the same hormones as the pill.
I cant have any injections or things that releasehormones. I no it sounds silly and probably impossible but thats just me!!! biggrin
I have the Mirena coil fitted and it hasn't stopped my periods either. I had it fitted in August 2003 and it took ages to settle down, then I did have regularish periods for about six months I'm now at the point where I'm considering having it removed because my periods are lasting longer (about 12 days in all), with only a three week break now. Just seems to be defeating the object of it being there. I've been sterilised so it's not for contraception, it's for the excessive bleeding.
It really hurt me when they inserted it and I've also had two quite large babies. confused
There are quite a few bad stories arent there, but none including babies!!!
So, has anyone had both of them fitted and compared the difference?Everyone that had the miren a fitted seems to have problems so il make sure i dont ask for that one!!

Ahh but you see the two "bad" comments are from Freckedbird and myself. Freckledbird has stated she's been sterilised and my hubby has had a vasectomey so it's not been used for contraceptive purposes.
I do know two people, one who got pregnatn with it .. and another person off this site who told me her's fell out (luckily she filt it go).

Why not go to the experts and seek advice from the Family Planning Clinic??? (couldn't remember if you said you ahd an appointment or not and get an appointment as a couple)
They have all the information available, you can see the various devices, and they deal with it all the time, as opposed to overworked GP's

Yeah iv got an appointment wth the family planning clinic but i didnt know whether to take my partner along. Not because i dont love or trust him, coz i do, but becoz im worried that the dr sort person will mention the baby risk. He is really scared of having kids and i am definitly too young. well i feel i am!!I know it sounds horrible but i hope you can see where im comin from

The doctor will know that you don't want kids, it's a family planning clinic you're going to!
The doctor will very likely mention the baby risk, with respect to the reliability of one contraceptive over another. That's the kind of advice you want isn't it? confused
O yeah of course. But dont family planning aslo mean the obvious...planning a family!! rolleyes
i just meant i dont want him to get soo worried that he wont touch me anymore.
There are circumstances and reasons for me being so cautious but i find them abit to personal to discuss.
But thank you ladies for all your interest and support. i am now goin to retire into my lonesome bed. But i would love to hear from others

Err yeah .. they are helping you plan a family rather than just falling pregnant through lack of or inadequate contraception.
Contraception is a two way street .. you are both responsible for creating a baby therefore if you don't want one you should both be responsible for preventing one!
Whilst taking oral/hormonal contraception stops you ovulating or conceiving it doesn't stop you from catching/passing on std's ... another excellent reason for seeing the FPC.

Iv been with my partner for over a year now and before we slept together, unprotected, we both went to the GU clinic. I admit i have been there and got the tshirt before and didnt even know what it was at that point. So iv learnt my lesson. So theres no concerns of catching anything really it is purley for a contraceptive method.
I didnt mean to sound funny at all though, just incase i did.
You didn't sound funny Gemma, I think what we're trying to say is that you need to consult professionals, with your boyfriend, to discuss it properly in order to find the most suitable methods for you both.
