Sony KDL40V4000
Approx £600, leaving you with money to buy a suitable stand for it.
There is a contrast figure ratio or something that you need to check out.
Cheaper tvs will have a ratio of about 5000, whereas a Sony may have 50,000.
The higher the number, the better quality the picture.
I got Samsung last year and they are really good. A friend bought Sony 2 months ago and it is brilliant.
If you are going to link a DVD, then use HDMI cables and quality will be perfect

If size isn't a problem... a 42" plasma HD ready with freeview.

We have just brought a Samsung 47in LCD telly. It is full HD and is packed with great features. It is the new series 5 as well. Cost £799 was £999.
If that sounds good I Could always pm you the model number. I searched all over for a tv that was what I was looking for. For a large format LCD tv, I could not find better for the price.
Sony are probably a better make but, they are more expensive, like for like.
Hope that helps.
If you want a drive in movie size screen, have a look at something like this

loads on this site for your budget but go for a 1080 if you plan on watching blu ray based movies or hooking up your pc to it
My mum has an LCD. It's put me right off. It's like watching something that's badly dubbed. I'm not sure if it's the TV or the fact that they live in the sticks and only have cooncil telly. dunno
Sorry... that was of no assistance to you at all! redface
I would also avoid a tv that is anything other than 1080i and 1080p. A lot of others only have 720p. The p is for pixles the more there are, the better the picture.
They are not currently broadcasting in 1080p till next year, but you need a telly that is capable now. Most of the good tv;s now are 1080p.
excuse my ignorance... and thread diversion, if I am, ignore me (again)!!
but:
what is the diference between plasma and ldc tv's?

The P is for progressive, which means it draws each picture in full as opposed to interlaced where it draws the odd and even fields seperatley fo make an entire frame.
Films are made in progressive (well, it's a bit more complex than that but explaining 3:2 pulldown conversion for broadcast ain't easy) but, if you watch a lot of sport or other fast moving type stuff then make sure you can watch interlaced too as it looks better.
TBH, if you buy a fekin huge telly costing £800 ish you should get the whole bloody lot (just in time for it to depreciate with the speed of a brick falling from a roof when it's tied to an elephant carrying an anvil(which is actually a uniform speed due to the effect of terminal velocity but i'll shut up now :whistling) when they start to release OLED tellys in affordable quantity's.
Shame we're not in Japan, they've had HD for ages and they're already experimenting with 2k broadcasting and 3D

Plasma = Gas
LCD = Liquid Crystals
To the OP if you want LCD get a Samsung (more TV for your money) if you fancy a Plasma go for Pioneer or Panasonic
get one with a remote control. I loathe having to get off my fat arse and find the off button.

I'd be happy to show you where your on button is and you don't have to get off your fat arse at all :rascal:
I've always had great trouble with Curry's/Dixons staff and their 'help'
(nothing against any in particular, if any of you are staff there...oh gawd, I'm back peddling here aren't I? Do you think anyone has noticed?)
But lordy! I havent found any yet who know more beyond the script.

Now here's the funny thing. The current freeview boxes that are being fitted inside the HD TV's are only capable of receiving normal resolution digital telly signals.
So even if you wanted to watch BBCHD channel, you can't actually watch it in HD via your built in freeview box.
The decoding method is not compatable so the only way of watching freeview HDTV will be with an external HD freeview box. Now I'm not in the market for one of those, so I don't know if they are available yet.
Saying all that we have a built in freeview box on our main telly. And now we are using it to stream bbc iplayer more and more, so for us,pc connectivity is now of more importance than it ever was.
just been looking for a bigger telly and think its samsung (seen that many) have started fitting freesat box inside them so you can watch some free programmes in hd now.

Yes Panasonic do it. I think it is the Viera range. I could be wrong on the name.

I work in the electrical sector for a major retailer and 1080p is a must if you don't want to have to change it again in the next 3/4 yrs and as kent and cock are saying there are lots of tv's with freesat built in now,but the downside is don't forget you need a dish to be able to receive these.
Panasonic and Samsung are the best on the market at present and you will find many deals in the market place at the moment as everyone is undercutting or price matching.

Sorry redface Its sort along the same lines though
Freeview TV??
I have an aerial on the roof that was for analogue TV and am wanting to run 1 or 2 cables of it into the bedrooms to run freeview boxes but when the big switch over happens will the aerial still receive the freeview signal or do I need to go along another route or get a new aerial?? I dont want expense of having multi-room and I don't want the same channels on upstairs as what is on downstairs on the digi box
At the minute there is 1 cables coming of the aerial but its sorta cemented into the wall  (council jobbie)
Does that make any sense? dunno
Thanks
