So today would be John Lennons 70th birthday. It's hard to imagine (no pun intended) him being 70 as he will forever remain 40.
When I heard about his murder it was the first time in my life that I had a 'remember where you were when you heard....' moments.
So happy birthday to a legend.

Is it really bad that I don't feel that bothered?
I'm not really sure why I'm not that bothered that it would have been his birthday? I like music, I can appreciate it was a shame he was shot and that he (and the Beatles) made a contribution to the British music, if not the world music, scene/development etc. It is sad for his family because someone somewhere is missing a much loved relative, famous or not.
But still, I fail to feel anything other than not very much, however I'm a bit like that with celebrities and am rarely moved by any of it. The only real exception being when Freddie Mercury passed away, a little tear did escape. Just the one. Then my heart froze over again and I went back to poking small insects with sticks of course! lol

Nope Gem, I don't think it's bad. Unless you're related or close friends with someone, I don't see how anyone can feel so sad about a celebrity dying. They're just another person.

Funny... I thought that with the Norman Wisdom thing... it is sad for any family losing a loved one but he made it to the ripe old age of 95 so no, I didn't feel sad, I think he made a great contribution but he had a good innings.
As for Lennon... yeah, again said that he was taken so young but I don't feel anything personally. I didn't know him. I don't think I've shed a tear for anyone famous who has died. Yes there's a certain sympathy for their family, I'd have to have a swinging brick not to spare a thought for them but when it doesn't have any bearing on my life I don't really think too much about it.

So by way of lightening the mood...
If they're doing a birthday legend tribute thing, who else do you think they should tribute, why and at what age?
I noticed google did a tribute to the 150th birthday of Mary Shelly and something to do with Einstein too, but can't remember what that was. confused

How about the anniversary of the Rubiks Cube, that would be good and they could make the little google "oo"s into interactive mini solvable Rubiks' Cubes to torment with during a very dull day.
Or commemorate the Concorde being decommissioned with the google logo enabled so you could fold it into a paper aeroplane and fire it around your web browser page.

Lennons birthday, hmm I guess it means something to his bigger fans but I would have thought the day he died meant more. You dont know a celebrity but you can miss what they brought to the world in this case Lennons music. You relate times in your life to the music and then you can be sad that there will be no more of that music or that voice. Like Gem I was a littel sad when Freddy popped off from this planet. That is basically because you could have played a video of my life and on every year backed it with a relevant Freddy/Queen song to represent it. The day he died that ceased to be the case. I guess its all just about nostalgia.

Ooo, yes definately agree about the nostalgia of it and it meaning something to someone somewhere, probably many people across quite a few places. I would have thought his anniversary would be of more poignant nature, but then the google animation is really cool and it's got us talking about it, so it's worked. smile

Suppose I don't really have much of a soundtrack that involves too many Beatles or Lennon songs, where as Queen and a number of other artists have been (and will be) there along the journey from Bump to Grave. Hey, that would make a good autobiography title. lol

I wonder why the Beatles never really registered but other musicians did? Especially as they were played in the house and the LP vinals were available? confused

I do wonder what kind of music Lennon might be making now had he survived; would he have reconciled with McCartney to release more collaborations? Would the beatles have reformed and done a 'farewell album' of unrealsed reworked pieces that never made the cut back in day? Would they have all just faded away into obscurity and old age? Would Yoko still have been making weird whale noise soundtracks while John romped around pretending to be the tail fin? And would they have named Liverpool Speake Airport 'John Lennon Airport' had he not be assasinated?

I posted the thread cos i saw it on Google (otherwise I would never have known) and it was such a surprise that he would be all the way to 70 by now thats all. I mean where did that time go? Im not a massive Lennon fan, my parents where though. I always prefered the Stones.
