Ok, not my cup of tea either is liver and onions.
My kids were given it by a kindly friend the other day and refused point blank to eat never, no-way, nada, niet.
Well this morning i was thinking what to give us all for dinner (I cook I don't think the NHS would cope if Mrs Lost did!) and thought hmmm Spag Bol its been awhile and we all like it, cool.
well upon dishing up one of the unholy trinity (my kids) asked what is spag Bo made of father of mine? ( he is really a pretentious little git love him lol) so quick as a flash I said Liver and onions!!
Well that was it could i get them to eat it could i fuuuuheckuslike. Was'nt going to happen. I even showed my 12 year old on google what Spag Bol was made of and of course hid the jar of Dolmio so as she thought i'd done it from scratch redface Made no difference.
After 5 hours of grief (ok it was 15 mins-ish) I gave up the Lads had burgers in rolls (the healthy option i know, i know and the girl had some salad n stuff grazed from the fridge and the dog now woofs in Italian rolleyes
I will have the last laugh tomorrow though lol we are going to have a great tea .........Pate on toast they love pate  just you wait soon as they've eaten it, i'll bloody strike
Brilliant lol
But I really do love liver and onions just never get to eat it these day.......... has to be lambs liver mind and not from a Dolmio jar
My 10 yr old wouldn't touch Lasagne up until a cpl of months ago... but she would eat pasta with bolognaise on it
Isn't it the same in a round about way??? rolleyes
lol
quick tip--add a sprinkle of ginger(warms the blood) and curry powder(flavour)
you can do the same with any mince dish.!
good cooking! wink
my kids wouldn't have left the table until they had eaten what was put in front of them...kids are spolit today and seem to think there is a menu that they can pick and choose from at dinner time...i was once kept at the dinner table for 4 hours until i had eaten my liver as a kid...its the only thing we don't serve in our house at dinner time now...but i still believe in the principle of there is children starving around the world and you should be thankful for what you get to eat.
Liver and Onions - Yes Please!
I always liked liver as a child, and strangely have been thinking of it recently... and other *traditional* old-style standard meals from childhood... steak and kidney pudding for example...>I doubt it was *steak* in my childhood, but still cow I should think<
I was also of the school where I ate what I was given, or went hungry... but that was a long time ago!!!
hmmm... liver, favva beans....
anyone for dinner?
lp
Liver is bleeeeuuuurrrggghhhh!
I'd never force a child to eat something they really despise - just like I'd never eat it myself.
making them sit at the table till they eat it is just ridiculous.
As long as her diet is fairly wel balanced, I'm not bothered what she eats, on what order or even where she sits to eat it.
I don't believe in making a big issue out of food. In the first instance it's just fuel for the body but at the same time, it's to be enjoyed so god's sake, give 'em summat they enjoy.
The liver/spag bol story was funny though. My daughter thought everything was chicken for years!

mmmmmmmm liver bacon and onions with mashed potato and mashed swede with lots of gravy
followed by steamed sponge pudding and custard
feel hungry now

mmmm that made my mouth water! Proper winter warming food.
I`ve always loved liver and onions since I was a kid.
Liver stinks, it's vile. I vowed as a kid when I was on my last forkful of forced eating of the stuff NEVER to put my kids through that, and I haven't. Then there was the "two days in a row meals", Sunday lunch leftovers became part of Monday's mince dinners! lol
What's the point in making kids sit at table til it's all eaten? it goes cold, they gag and quite often chuck, they're upset, you're upset.
My best way was to say right get down off the table but you go without supper or sweets for rest of week whatever.
I shudder when I think of my upbringing in the eating sense. :scared:

but did you ever stand by your word...how many kids think.."oh mum she'll give in and let me have what i want!"...i hate to see food wasted...and kids know we can be soft.

The best liver is veal, try looking for a recipe with orange sauce, lost it`s bloody fantastic. Believe me .......I`m not a great lover of liver lol

nooooo.
the best liver is either chicken liver or goose livers....they are softer and less bitter and available from supermarkets. I getmine from tesco and they only cost a quid
i cook it regularly, sauted with onions, garlic and black pepper, flambed at the end.........with either brandy or calvados. if i have any left i make my own pate out of it.
a good tip with liver is to coat it in seasoned flour before frying.
apparently the tip for producing soft forms of other livers is to soften it in milk beore cooking.....but as this sounds completely gross i havnt tried it.
We used to have a rule in our house that " you got what you were given" ie what was being made and we always ate together as a family. i suppose i was lucky!! but as a result and because i was fortunate enough to eat out regulalry i was exposed to all sorts to foods from a young age, giving me "an educated palette" and vision these days in my own cooking.
........oh, and a bit of a tummy too!!!!
The only time I would expect to be served liver is when I go to hell..... rolleyes

as kids we always had to finish our plates before we could leave the table now i will eat almost anything with exception to turnip parsnip pate and cheesecake n thats all i wont eat. we all grew into big people (waist size sence) because even now i still finish my plate
i dont follow the same tradition with my son he suffers with bad acid reflux and anything that has gone cold or a teaspoon to much and he will throw up so i let him eat as much as he wants and pretty much when he wants but he is good with this i make a small dinner on a night and the rest of the day he eats mainly dry bread and yoghurts and fruit i keep a chocolate box in the house which he does not really bother with and never asks for sweets from the shop his downfall is icecream which he can eat by the boxfull but in his words " when my tummy burns the ice cream cools it" which sorta makes sence

I wanted to quote a funny snippet to highlight it - but the whole bluddy lot has just had me creased up, I can't pull just one bit! :lol2:
Absolutely superb :rotflmao: Good luck when you strike! :rotflmao:
Very good Lost...... get the little blighters back i say!!! lol   My daughter would never eat lamb....... so I told her it was sheep, she ate it all up like a good un then!!
I do like liver though....prefer lambs to liver! But not cooked so long it looks and tastes like its had a hard drinking life!! confused :?
My old gran used to cook an mean liver and onions wi gravy that would stick wall panels up! Needs mash and streaky bacon to complete the picture.
Cant help but be the miserable old git I am and say "theyd have ate it if they were ungy" If I asked what was for tea any more than a few seconds before we sat at the table my Ma would have replied " Shit and sugar - unless yer Dad wants extra sugar" .
We ate mostly what we were given , cos we knew no different - you know what It just never crossed our minds that we could send tea back and get something else. God im old !!

My "Dad" did that to my sister when we were kids and it was liver and onions. She threw up all over her dinner and was sitting right next to me when she did it. She now hates liver and onions even more than she did then and I now suffer from a sickness phobia which is possibly the result of it.
I never force feed my kids. They either eat it or they don't. If they don't they go hungry confused
As an aside. I love liver and onions as long as they are both well done and served with smooth mashed potato and lovely gravy.
Liver, onions, bacon mashed potatoes and thick, thick gravy YUM!!
I think its a terrible idea force feeding kids, making them eat food they dont like, bang out of order.
As a kid I was served up the same plate of dinner, 4 days on the trot. It became a battle of wills between my Father and me. I won!

They are told if they leave it then there is nothing else untill the next meal time...
No sweets,crisps,chocolates,ice-lollies etc...
They rarely leave anything...
My 17 year old loves liver and bacon so much I have to cook it every week! He gives me a row if I don't buy any and he practically licks the plate clean

but isn't telling them "your get nothing till your next meal time"...which make's them eat what is in front of them....just another way of force feeding them?
The idea was not to bring out strong opinions with this post Sorry sad
