If a thread is locked and someone pm's a Mod about it, giving a good enough reason for it to be opened then it would be looked at. Im not saying it would, or wouldnt be reopended, but we would discuss it, and then give the person who sent the pm, a decision. Posts have been reopened in the past, and Im sure they will in the future.
It is a case of cant do right for doing wrong. If we leave threads open, people complain, if we lock them people complain, rolleyes

Well admin have said NO threads have ever been re-opened, but you are saying they have? Am interested to know which is an accurate statement.
Ahem - wave
I had my thread locked - then unlocked - after people who had no interest in the 'topic' themselves, :wary: decided to get 'picky' about certain points which also didn't concern them personally, but were trying to state I was somehow in breech of rules.
Despite answering everything everything honestly and coming up with a valid reason as to why something was 'as it was' more and more, of the same circle, came back with twisted, complete non-topic related posts. There was a complaint made and the thread was locked AND removed while admin looked over it. It was found I was not in breech of ANY sh rules so the thread was then unlocked to continue - though complete with moderaters warning - to stick to the topic alone - Fair enough I believe.. A few posts were then edited because they were stating support for myself & what I was trying to do... I was annoyed at first cos they were nice posts... but then again, after a think, I realised that they still wern't fully on topic - just support for it.
At the end of the day I do support the mods.. and admin, what prattle they have to deal with, usually from a familiar circle of 'gun loaders' who then sit back and watch others get tangled up fireing the bullets while doing this >> innocent >> dunno >> bolt
But all in all... Mods - Carry on the thankless work - some of us appreaciate it kiss (in the end wink )

Good point Minxie, far too many threads are hi-jacked with trivia which is of little value or interest and certainly no relevance to the topic.

Ooooh I so want to lock this thread!! confused :? :? lol   wink
Now why would you really want to do that?
At least this thread is staying more or less on the subject to which I originally posted. Unlike some of the threads still going where it has gone a million miles away from the original posting.
There have been some very good points made in both arguements if honest. Hopefully the thread can run, and will just die it's natural course! Which I feel is the way it should be.
innocent
Threads never die they just get put into storage and Bilko makes cardies and other such things out of them. I have heard a rumor that he employs Dawnie as his chief knitter and cardie designer.
Keep your eyes open for an old gent walking down your street wearing a thread cardie, a wooly hat, scarf and mittens.

some of the things i have witnessed on the forums in the time i have been here have been outrageous.
perish the thought that people should accuse people of bullying/ belonging to a clique/being provocative etc.............
for example.....i recently made a post on Minxies thread before things really got heated... and what did i get.....
one of these flipa ,,,,,
i think its time some of the mods posted some further guidelines / sent PM's to the main antagonists before people really start to fall out with one another.
Well I hope hijacking never stops as I like doing it redface but not to hurt anyone just because sometimes I think its funny surprisedops: . If it all becomes too PC I know I just wont post.
What I always remember is that if I start a thread I dont own that thread in the same way if I start a conversation I dont own in in my home, work etc. I may not always like comments in threads but neither do I ever take any of them to heart as its only a conversation, mostly with people who dont really know me.
I am also someone who is dead old, having been here nearly 4 years and I have seen how things spark at times and get very heated - time of year, boredom, personal agendas etc etc. Locking a thread can take the heat out of it until things calm down again. Very few topics are unique in their content so if they get locked, likely to come up again in another guise if its important or topical enough.

You’d be surprised the damage a trained terrorist can do to a commercial airliner with a simple assortment of tasty desserts. Expect (knee jerk) government legislation at any moment. rolleyes
Mmmmmm, Baklavas!
:salivatinguncontrollably:
Especially when they're following a starter of battered fried courgettes, and a main course of Kleftika!
Wheres my credit card- I need to book tickets!

Apologies, as I am kinda hijacking myself... as haven't been involved in this thread up to now!
But I read Corrie's post and for me, it made sense. Threads are effectively conversations, and conversations take an odd turn and go off at tangents at times. Sometimes this is for the better, and sometimes it is frustrating for the original speaker/poster. It's life though...
It would be a shame if everything was too highly regimented - although I absolutely appreciate there has to be regulation.

As this is my original post, I would hate to see the topic go off in tangents! If that happens then the thread, in my opinion should be locked, as the thread has then run it's course.

as the OP, you do of course have the right to PM a Mod, and ask that they lock 'your' thread.
however, it would look somewhat odd, were you to do that, given your original post re: the locking of threads, dontcha think? confused especially this bit . . . .
If lots of comments are being made, is it not good sense to leave it open if people want to comment on it?

lol
this thread has been thoroughly hijacked with something about Greek pastries, but in one post you've managed to bring it right back onto ((( your? :? ))) topic? so . . . the hijack's neither here nor there, so long as someone who's interested in it can steer it back on course, in line with the actual topic, which has been kind of my point all along? ;)

Yup. A good post Corrie can't say I disagree. cool
There are occasions when a thread is locked, but a similar topic is left to run. This does not attract the same intensity of interest, and proceeds to run quietly and without controversy.
Locked thread don't always carry an explanation as to why and precisely how the decision was arrived at. The decision tends to come across as a 'gut reaction' sometimes. Sometimes threads are locked when there has not been any apparent conflict. But I suppose we don't see the extreme postings which are edited in time.
So I assume that with some threads, there is an increase in either extreme viewpoints, complaints or 'advice', which is sent to the mods from various grumblers and professional complainers. Overwhelmed by this the mods just simply close it.
So its probably not the content of the thread but the presence of such insidious behaviour.

That is right what you say. But I look at threads and see people that seem to " hijack " a thread for no reason that I can see. That to me is so annoying. If that happens then a thread should be locked, and in my opinion rightly so.

There are times when a serious thread should be kept on track but anything else is fair game
We don't own thread just because we start them. We can't be responsible for what others post or what they see as humour.
When I make a thread I know the risks I'm taking and as long as the thread is amusing, I don't care which direction it takes confused
I might give it a go later because I would like help on something :lol2:

That's a fair point, but my view for what it is worth is, that I felt this was an issue that a lot of people had discussed on many occasions. There have been timewaster threads galore, which let's be fair is a serious issue for most. But even with a thread like that it tends to turn into a free for all of jokes and nothing at all to do with the original posters comments.
There are of course threads that start off on a funny line and so they do tend to stay exactly that, but even the quite serious topics get turned into laughable threads at times. I think at this rate this thread will be going all year, unless Bilko locks it. lol

Isnt the above comment such as life though how many times does any conversation stay on track? none that i can ever recall having. thats all it is, people having a banter just because the topic isnt about the OP or on topic doesn not mean it isnt relevant wink
