Very good point Master 55... I wholeheartedly agree.....
I also think that car drivers should be made to do a bike test, as most car drivers are not aware of how dangerous they actually are behind the wheel, and need to feel vulnerable themselves to appreciate this situation fully.
The standards of driving in this country are abysmal to say the least. We all know the 4 wheel drivers and BMW owners who haven't bought the optional extr indicators, or drive for miles with the phone stuck to their earhole.... They are beyond educating, they represent the selfish image that British people in general are becoming tarred with.
I don't agree with making HGVs use the outside lane (lane 1) either, but lane hogging in the middle lane is ignorant too. yes, we all need a run-up on a hill, but if you know your vehicle won't pull past what you are trying to pass, don't attempt the manouvre in the first place. The makers gave us a thing called a gearbox....
I appreciate HGV drivers more than many motorists, but there are also some who like nothing better than to sit 2 ft. away from the rear bumper at 60 mph, which is bloody dangerous, and negligent in the extreme....
Same goes for car drivers, why is it when I'm out in the bus there's a motorist so close that I can't see him in the mirror. It's their bill if they hit it anyway, and it'll be a big bill too, but they can't have the wit to keep a safe distance... But as usual the police do bugger all about them, they'd taher pull me over for having a brake light out or a slightly worn tyre...
Rant over,
Rick!
I know planes are far cheaper than they used to be but they are still a pain.
I go to Ireland regularly and to fly means a frustrating drive to the most stupidly located airport in the UK i.e Leeds/Bradford, hanging around for the flight, crossing fingers that the neanderthal baggage handlers can read "fragile" and dicking around at the other end trying to get the hire car.
I drive to the other side of the country and take the car on the boat - far easier!
Knowing truckers as I do, how are other drivers going to enter or exit the motorway when the trucks are all running on the inside lane, all governed to the regulatory 56 miles per hour, therefore all driving at the same speed, and the usual minimal distance between them. And as we know a lot of these drivers will use this position to retaliate against this stupid rule to gain some power and will prevent drivers moving over to the inside lane to exit, taking into account that SOME car drivers wait until the start of the exit slipway before trying to move over anyway.
What about the problems for drivers trying to access the motorway via the slip roads. Can you imaginge the queue's there may be with drivers waiting for a suitable gap in the truck flow to get onto the motorway safely ?.
This I feel is a ridulous attemp by the government to 'win over' car drivers votes, as they may not see or be aware of the major implications this proposed law may have.
I know this reply may cause anger from many people, but more information should be made public abobout the rules and regulations a truck driver has to abide by, and then some of the motorway and other roads frustration anger may be avoided.
If the police put half the effort into enforcing the law against "dangerous driving" that they put into enforcing speed limits (which are often chosen by local counsillors with no experience in road safety and a vested interest in peasing only local residents not the drivers of through traffic), then the roads would be a lot safer.
