My Dad died when I was 22, and 12 years on when I open up his old 'baccy tin ( which I painted his name on as a kid) the smell takes me right back.....sitting on his knee on a saturday morning, writing out his bets for him while he rolled his Old Holbourn.
Ah, my wholesome youth!
Will You by Hazel O'Connor.....takes me back to when I was 14 and in love for the first time. We still talk on the phone every few weeks (on the sly), after getting back in touch about 6 years ago but purely as friends now.
Strange you mention that... Most things hold memories and especially music for me..
Tracks from the 80's etc most have a memory that plays in my mind when they play.. not just the obvious like what we were doing but things like where we were who we were with the weather etc.. Strange eh!
Certain smells too.. put you in a time and a place long since forgotten.

You don't see them much these days, but I love the smell of babies plastic pants - takes me back 30 years.
And, I love poppies. I grew up in a really dirty, dusty neglected are of the town, at the back of our entry was an abandoned building site where we used to play.
One day we could see something red in the distance, and when we got closer we were amazed to see it was a poppy. We couldn't believe something so beautiful could grow in all the decay.
When I hear Rod Stewarts Maggie May I always think of my sisters hen party.
We went to Cinderella Rockerfella's in Leeds and I was the youngest of the bunch. All the girls were eyeing up this bloke who was really trendy. You know the type,'i love me who do you love?' oxford bags and blazer, all in fashion then
They were all dancing as close as they could get to him and he walked off! He came to me, asked me if I wanted a drink and dance and the others were gobsmacked! Shame I had to decline, never been into 'trendies'. It was my first proper grown up girls night out, a night I'll never forget
I had to think about this, odd, no? It is smells, just a hint and back I go, but try to think what they are, it's a brick wall.
Thyme and mint. Thyme for a fab holiday in the Med and mint for a girl by a river.
...and I have just remembered hay.....
