Will be upgrading my mobile phone soon and a bit confused , could anyone tell me if a phone isn't Wi-Fi (WLAN) what does this mean if a mobile has built in hands free what does that thanks x
WiFi = wireless fidelity, which means you can connect to the internet in the same way you would a laptop etc, via a wireless hotspot, or wireless home broadband.
Non-wifi phones may well be able to connect via a different method, eg WAP though.
Built in handsfree means it has a speakerphone function.
Simples
Wi-Fi is a system where you can connect to a wireless internet connection just like a pc does, lots of pubs, hotels and large shops offer a free or pay per use wi-fi service. If you don't use the internet on your phone very much then it's not important, pretty much every phone on the market has WAP included which allows you to connect to the internet using the same method as your calls- you can still go online but ou pay your service provider for the amount of data you use (or you can pre buy a certain amount of data use if you use the web on a regular basis, this will work out cheaper).
Built in hands free usualy means that the phone has a built in speaker so you can chat without having the phone to your ear, mainly used while in the car. You can also use a little wireless thingy that you clip on your ear to do the same job- this uses a feature called bluetooth. Hands free and bluetooth are both fetures on most phones too.
Just work out what is important to you. Cost of contract, camera, mp3 player etc, then have a look what handset offers those features
Thankyou think a wifi phone be bestany suggestions thanks xxx
Have you looked on Which? or one of the comparison sites?
At the end of the day, phones are a very subjective thing - what certain folk like, others detest. Sometimes is good to see one of those sites so you can compare features side by side.

The Blackberry Curve is rather good, it's just stupidly complicated to get everything set up
(once it is though it's bloody good)

Just don't get the Blackberry Storm. It's an irritating piece of junk. The curve is better cos it does what it says on the tin.
Of course there's always the iPhone. A great piece of technology, both hardware and software, but you are still tied to a single carrier.

Yes. But once you have your contract, with any phone, you are tied to that carrier.
Both my sons have iphones, the only thing they ever agreed with each other about.
And with the WiFi you are not tied to any carrier (yes, I know) but can use any wifi hotspot, or your neighbours unsecured wireless router, or anyone elses unsecured system. Looking around with network connections on my pc I can see 3 unsecured systems around me (yes, I know....dishonest....but for email it's a few kb...).
So, go for WiFi.
I do the same log into unsecured net works...but careful about what I use it for.
