i think they said that you had to register the number on a web site, then if it was stolen, they could trace you as the owner if it was found
redface sorry can't remember what the site was called lol
fil
is the site name.
You register your 16 digit number with them, if your phone gets stolen you let them know and they immobilise your phone so nobody else can ever use it, even with a new sim. You may not get your phone back but you can make sure nobody else can use it or sell it.
I think due to the amount of people trying to use the site it has crashed! lol
Try again later perhaps.
Thanks--this is really helpful. I didnt know about that site but I`ll take a look at that. smile
Also if you dial 112 the phone will find any service and connect you to the emergency services even if your own service is unavailable.
Also you can unlock your car without your remote key. If you lock your keys in the car but there is a spare set at home or with your wife/hubby elsewhere, you call them with your mobile - to their mobile - and get them to press the key button near thier phone while you hold your phone hear the lock. The signal passes from one phone to the other and unlocks your door. biggrin It only works if both phones are mobiles but it does do it, we tried it at work.
There is also a way of tracking your mobile phone, so if its lost or stolen you can locate it.

both these sites are pretty good, also good for keeping tabs on the nippers, one of the sites you can actualy track the phone on a map so you know exsactly where it is.
funky i thought dunno

Same here. My is cheap, PAYG and does very little.
Please don't do as one of the sites suggests and call 112 to test your mobile. 112 calls come us as annonymous on call centre softare - if you say nothing for 30 (might be 20 now as they were trying to lower it), seconds then they have to attempt to trace the call. It's not always possible and is a hellish job for them to do.
If you do ever call to test the 112 thing works - please at least say to the operator that it's a test call. From the operators point of view - if you are silent - thay have that doubt that it could be a genuine emergency but that you cannot get through to them or speak. Following the death of a caller who had been written off as a silent call, they have to be extra vigilant.
Rather than test it - take it from me, 112 works. It's the European emergency service number and is recognised over here as foreigners use it all the time.

Your service provider will have it biggrin They can also block the sim & the phone for you (even if a new sim is put in the phone)
USE a really shit mobile like me and nobody bothers even thinking of nicking it.
Hooray.
I am told, today, that every time you use your mobile the IMEI number is transmitted along with your number.
Also it is illegal to alter or tamper with the IMEI number in any way.
Another thing I have found out as well, is that you can use an old mobile phone as a tracking device in your car if it is stolen.
Put a £5 top-up on the phone, hard wire the phone direct to the car battery. Turn on the phone. Hide it in the car behind dashboard or other place like door panels.
If the car is stolen, ring the phone in the car and inform your service provider and they can trace the location.
Dont know if it will work. I was told by a O2 call centre team leader ??????

Yep, this also works Phred
and it works with the sites i mentioned in my previous post, so not only will the police know where your car / person / property is, but you will be able to follow them / it on an online map yourself.
 thats actually quite scary,
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< runs off to check for hidden mobile phones redface

1. Connect car recharging cable to phone.
2. Connect charging cable to 12 volt power supply, this will ensure phone receive correct voltage.
3. Some phones give their GPS location.
4. Other phone can only be tracked by which phone mast they are logged onto.
5. It can work.
