Agreed - in fact some are 'bluddy' fantastic.
Now that we have clearly established that - let's focus in on the newbie component of this debate.
I think most will agree that a lot of newbies have been flamed, justly or unjustly, by other members - usually not the mods anyway unless it is obviously needed.
So what about having a newbie 'cooling-off' period when someone joins - i.e. if you say join on say 1 July - you can read but you can't post until say 15 July. Is that not technically possible? Would seem to sort out a lot of the premature ejaculators so to speak.
The Mods ensure a certain standard is maintained as per the AUP and they can exercise discretion as they see fit. The Mods help to shape this site and make it the place we know and love. Mal has also introduced the Mentor initiative to help Newbies.
This site is free, yet some people choose to dissent. Gift horses and mouths spring to mind.

Mods are members who have displayed enough qualities for Mark to appoint as guardians of morals, mores and standards.

I'd say it was a flat heirachy. Mark being the big black darlek at the top ruling everybody. His ball and chain will obviously be the brains behind everything but is much more polite to act in the shadows.
The Mods are all in the same pool, or should I say jacuzee? Same power, some like to punish while others like to take. What they all like is lots of fun from each other and all their subordinates.
The regular members, ie those who have posted and been honest and opinionated throughout their time here will notice that there faux pars are often met with banter or similar humour. Although I say regulars this can be said to all who have a sense of humour or a streak of consideration for those other than themselves.
The 'others' these are at the same level of the 'regular members' but are just not as known due to the shortness of posts, information shared etc....
The one post wannabies. These are just a joke. Yes, most people did start off with a (I WANT A SHAG NOW!!!!) post but those that showed humour, resilience or a genuine interest to be on this site have moved a step up. Everybody knows the one post wannabies. They are usually 'pounced upon' as people generally believe. All though mods have there own lives and interests, there first post on any of these 'adds' are supportive, informative and would like to encourage a new member to come from its starting blocks of the first post.
Encouragement should not be left to the mods/ops. Yes they've probably seen it all before and their once god like patience dwindeld throughout the years it is us. The others and posters that should be the most encouraging factor of this site. The mods are few and far between. The real power is with the numbers of good natured people who do still have passion for a new potencial friend to start enjoying themselves here.
Why do the moaners who regulary post 'We should change things. Mods should be nicer etc..' when it is actually in your own power to be the first call of contact. You should lead by example and share your knowledge with the others. This doesn't mean slagg other people off to all the newbies, what I mean is if you would like to see a more encouraging site then by all means step up to the challenge and encourage away.
Right, thats enough bollox for one evening. I'm going to be off day dreamming about somebody. (Sorry Rach but when you told me what you're gonna do I can't seem to get it out of my mind now....)
