Unfortunately, in an age where speed traps are all too often just a soft way for the authorities to rake in money rather than prevent accidents. Not so long ago, I was done for doing 38 mph on a very quiet stretch of 30 mph limit road at 22h00! ..... Guilty? Yes, but not remotely dangerously.

That is sooo true. I hate speed cameras in certain locations. I'll give you an example. The police authority (or whoever runs these bloody things) state that..... "speed cameras are only to be used in accident blackspots". Yet when then modernised the local A road to accept the traffic of the new motorway, lo and behold a camera was installed at the same time. So did the road planner deliberately see this as being a blackspot even before a car had driven along it? Or could it just be a way of grabbing people as they come off the motorway and may be doing more than the 40 limit.
