A thread and poll here prompted by a question I was asked whilst out last night. A user who has been on the site for a while asked me "So whats this munch your organizing then whats different about that?"
How many users know what a Munch is? or know the difference between a Munch and a social? It seems besides Wigan the term is little used now and maybe drifted out of popular use by non forum users. I always thought the word Munch added a little more officialness to the event and would attract more attendees due to the more stringent safeguards. Now I am wondering if its an outdated term which folk dont understand and may skip by without looking.
I have an event to announce soon and need specific numbers for the entire venue to be used so once again looking for the best possible title. Comments welcomed.
For anyone who does not know what a munch is here is a link for enlightenment, but please do answer the poll before reading lol

Many thanks in advance.

i consider a munch to be a social event, but one that is held in a private venue where no vanillas would likely to be.
there would be a list and only those on that list could get in.
it would be purely social and no sexual pressures or activity.
a oppertunity for those who have been swinging to offer advice to the new people,
a oppertunity to see who is likely to turn up.
a oppertunity to meet face to face with people off the forums and now chat and put names to faces.
a chance to make connections that may possible turn into swinging meets later on.
all in all a protected but fun evening for swingers to attend.
i will be keeping a close eye on the munch date you are planning and hopefully will be able to attend.

As a relatively long term forum and chat user who has actually thought about this before lol I`ll give you my tuppence worth .....
"Munch" always gave me the impression of an "old school" SH cliquey get together...a place for the "we were here first" brigade to swap stories about the good old days of SH "before the takeover" blah blah blahddy fuckin blah !!
Whereas .. on the other hand
A social sounds like an exciting get together of chatroom chatters who have talked to each other online and want to get together to see what people are actually like and find out if they want to shag them....
No contest ..... We`d consider socials and have attended one or two ....but would probably not bother with a munch.
This was posted for information only and is in no way intended to cause argument ....just an honest answer to a perfectly reasonable question.

This is 100% class flower biggrin Totally agree with it too :lol2:

As a long term forum user you would have remembered that there was only one type of event that could be run from SH. That was the munch, where a set of rules dictated how a social could be run.
The reason why there was a change was because members asked admin to review the rules. I was one of those that asked for a review, as I run curry nights in and around Nottingham and the rules back then would not allow me to invite any friend of mine as they were not a member of SH. This is the main difference between a "Munch" and a "Social". Attendees of a Munch have to be members of SH. Attendees of a Social can be from this site, any other site, banned members, mates of the organisor, well in fact anybody that the organisor so chooses.
As for the evening themselves, I can only go off my experience and that is that there is no difference between a social and a munch. Just a load of peeps, or not so many peeps, getting together and having a chinwag, knees-up and enjoying themselves.
Would I go to a munch over a social or vice-versa. Nope.......they are both as enjoyable, and the people who organise them do a wonderful job.
The only critisism of a social, is that you do not know who is attending from other sites.......but this has never stopped me going to any that I have attended.

I remember the term "Munch" rather fondly - because back in 'pre-twins' days Sappho and I used to go to them. I agree that a social has fewer rules about attendance than a Munch, but that wouldn't put me off, providing there were at least one or two people whose names I recognised.
Sappho and I are hoping to attend the munch in Bristol (or whatever it ends up being called), so I hope it goes ahead.
Incidentally, it's interesting to see the Forum v Chatroom thing cropping up again. When I did go to munches, they often divided into those who played in the chatrooms and those who posted in the forum - with a few who did both flitting between the two. i think that's quite natural. I love the Forum and although I have tried the chatroom quite often (including earlier this evening) I never feel quite at home there. It's all a bit fast moving and I think you have to be quite brief in your posts. Not exactly my strong point! redface
Others, of course, feel exactly the opposite - and that's fine. Each to their own.

Thanks so far all for the views. Have quoted Fem's post above because I felt Fem has hit the nail on the head reference what Munch's are all about. Dave_Notts has also made some good points  to both. Ohhh & BTW Fem the date is in big bold letters in my signature lol
Flower and Lost,Interesting views. Honestly can not say I have ever seen anything like that. At nearly ever Munch I have been to even the Bristol ones the crowd at one has been almost entirely different to the crowd at the next. Yes there may be some older forum members that frequent Munchs regularly but they make up a very small total of the 70-150 attendees these events attract and if you specifically did not want to join them it would be rather easy. If munchs were forum members and socials were chat members I think munchs would only have attendances of about 20  From what I have seen the mix is split between both groups plus members who do neither and only surf the lets meet up forum looking for meets.
Note for the Mods: Would there be any problem calling the event say "Bristol social Munch"? The idea being to put social in the title with the full event explanation inside the thread.
To everyone who has expressed an interest in attending in this thread I thank you all very much and hope it will be a great event for you all.
Finally! Wiggle  Had a funny feeling you might pop up biggrin hope the thread has led to some enlightenment. We shall most definitely be doing as you said wink

I've been to both Munches and socials organised by people on the site.
From my perspective (I guess without my mod hat on) Munches tend to be larger events with more of an 'occasion' feel about them. Maybe that is because I tend to go to the more established Munches. There are a huge variety of people at them - chatroom and forum folk.
Socials tend to be smaller and less 'formal'. I have been to a couple of great socials although from a discretion/privacy perspective, I think I prefer Munches in that I know that everyone is from the site and adhering to the (pretty reasonable) site rules regarding Munch behaviour.
But that's just me.

Ahhh yes, a munch. A place where noobies can talk to the old hands and learn all about swinging in a no pressure, no play environment.
Only if you were too new and unknown you couldn't get onto the list, and the music would be soooo loud you could never ask any questions anyway lol
I remember in the good old days going to munches, being asked who I was and then to be told ewwwwww you are one of those chatroom people.
Yes the socials are a way to invite non site members to the event, but as others have commented, the potential of others attending has never stopped me from going to the events I've wanted to go to.
Now, for us, attendance depends on if we are free, where it is, and who is going. Rather than the lets get our names down for every event going as it had been in the past. Real life and the spiraling costs do take over at times.
One thing I've noticed though is that there are afew people who put their names on lists to attend socials with no intention of really going, just it keeps them in with the circle for a while longer.

lol you didn't need permission from the site to hold a social. You needed permission to publically advertise it. Prior to the change in rules, socials were organised without advertising on the site. A bit of word of mouth and so on. It would be easier now with so many chatrooms but when there was only one chatroom :eeek: it was a bit harder.
Now you can advertise publically, it is a lot easier to organise a social where you can invite anybody you so wish.

Totally baffling if you ask me. When I requested that one of my events was listed as a Munch, it was refused. The event was held in a private venue, with all SH members, and a non playing environment. Just a bloody good evening out with the site members who came along. And very nice it was too. The only thing we didnt do was make people wear badges as if visiting a zoo whilst on a school trip lol.
But when I asked if it could be classed as a Munch instead of a social, I was told NO!
Explain someone please!

A munch is a social......But with subtle differences...
A munch is for SH members only...
A social can include anyone (including banned members)
A munch is a no play enviroment
A social can be whatever the organiser wants it to be....

So why was my event not allowed to be a Munch and stickied? I have been pondering this for some time. Still no definitive answer has been forthcoming.

Most things have been covered above, but one thing I cannot see mentioned is that a munch has to be open to all SH members who want to come. Anyone who organises an event where they wish to doctor the statistics, i.e. make it couples only, or (more often) restrict the number of single males, cannot call it a munch - it would have to be a social.

I was just going to say that but you beat me to it lol
Another thing about munches is that the behaviour of those attending is more controllable in so much that anyone who does misbeahve, can end up being banned from the site, where as with a social not all attendees are members.
I would attend both socials and munches, depending on dates and feeling comfortable that the person organising it knows what they are doing and can be trusted (shame we cant get to the Bristol one as we would trust Tweeky 100% to organise a brilliant night out). However dates, locations and real life stuff does stop us attending as many events as we would like.
Good thread Tweeky wink

I don't know the answer as I cannot recall your event, but where was it held? It might have been something to do with that. Or did you limit the number of people who could come - as in numbers of single males, for example?
I think it was prior to my time as a Mod, so I honestly can't say without further detail.

Thanks Nola, the event was held in a lovely hotel, all those attending were SH members, the evening consisted of a four course dinner and entertainment supplied by SH members, and the only limit was the room capacity of 70. The charge for the evening was a head, which covered the cost of the meal, everything else was provided FOC by SH members. The tickets were sold on a first come first served basis, and were directly paid to the hotel to cover the cost of the meals. I took no money for this event.
I saw this as falling within the guidelines of a Munch, and wanted it to be stickied, but was told by whoever it was that it couldnt be classed as that. I cant remember being given a specific reason.
