the key to not being ignored is to post something witty and/or insightful.....and to use big text like this!!!

Somebody who I have enormous respect for has pointed out to me that my original post could possibly be read by new posters and seen to be discouraging them from posting.

Really? I didn't read it that way at all. I actually thought you were being very positive, and encouraging, and simply pointing out that if someone doesn't like the content or the general tone of the forum, then they have it within their power to change it very easily, simply by making their own contribution to it. I've had to re-read it several times and force myself to see it in a different light. Just goes to show I suppose that the meaning we take from a post quite often has very little to do the intent of the poster, and everything to do with our own perceptions and prejudices. Those who are intent on seeing a clique will see evidence of it wherever they look. I personally would find it hard to say who's in it, and who's not, because it must by definition be a shape-shifting beast, depending on who's actually active on the forum at the time.
The forum needs a continual influx of new blood, because otherwise it would eventually die on it's arse. Most people I think realise that, and quite a lot actually go out of their way to welcome newbies, and engage with them. That does of course mean that engaging with them might be to disagree entirely with what they've said, or point out that maybe they've said something they might want to reconsider, but that is a risk we all take when we let our thoughts loose on the forum. It's part of the game, and we all play by the same rules. I accept that it's easier to have a thick skin about things when you've been here a while, and I also accept that I could probably get away with something other newer posters might not, simply because I've been here so long, other regulars are familiar with my style, and quite often choose to read between the lines, and interpret my intent even when my wording leaves something to be desired. That is not because I am part of some clique, but because that sort of familiarity happens quite naturally over time.
Neil x x x ;)
I also think there are those who are skilled at arguing. They can construct an arguemnt from almost nothing and pursue it luring people into the argument. Whilst the argument rages people are distracted from the main point of the debate. Such arguers often think that by winning an argument they have established an opinion or made a significant point. Usually not, they have dissipated the intellect on the subject matter and laid waste to useful thinkers.

I want to make that clear, that is not and never was my point.
My ire was vented at those who chose to use the thread Ben started with the intention of generating a good discussion on an important topic, into a chance to slap down a forum member or two. It was that and that alone that irked me.
I wish to make it entirely clear that I would actively encourage new people to post. I was in that position a few weeks ago and I can highly recommend participating in the threads that interest you. Same goes for more long standing members who do not post. I feel the Forum contributes greatly to the site and the more voices that are heard, the better.
If my original post did not make this clear, I apologise, that is my error. I would also add as a proviso, that whilst my post may have put some people off, I feel that perpetuating the myth that unless a newbie fits in with the ideals of the all pervasive clique, they will be admonished and cast out is probably more off-putting to many. Which is precisely why I made the post in the first place.
I hope this has cleared up any confusion, potential or other otherwise.
Anyway, that's the serious post for the week over. Can I please be silly again now? I need to work out the calorific content of ejaculate as a percentage of a ladies daily recommended calorie intake and then translate that into r.o.p.d (recommended orgasms per day) to keep her sated. And you think Stephen Hawking had a few tough sums to do?
;-)

Wish I could just put the first line of Res's post here, but still have not worked out how to!
Anyway, in response to the first bit.....
It shows how we all read things differently, I read Res's previous post twice, to fully get the handle of it.
To me, the way it was written did not come off as discouraging new posters at all!
This is it, we all read things and interprete them in our own different ways!
Has the original poster come to any conclusion on all the responses this thread has generated, who have we all been going around in circles, and nothing has been established?
I lost interest when it turned into a thread about resurrecting old posts and folk having a bash at each other.
Plus ca change.

people spent good time thinking about this thread and replying in this thread to a question you posed..... so for you to dismiss them so off-hand for me shows a real lack of respect......
I am sorry but that has got me angry... re "firestarter"
like others have said... you can be part of the problem or part of the solution, ....but next time I know not to bother putting down comments in your threads.....
A very disappointed fabio.... you know where my pm box is if you want a constructive conversation
Point taken Fabio. Please don't think I'm not interested in the opinion of others. When things go off topic or get personal I tend to read but not contribute, which is what I meant by lose interest.
I agree with a lot of the posts on both sides of the debate as it goes.

Avoiding the rather obvious "Beware little pricks" line, It behoves me to ask, do you weigh as much as a duck?

More, but I can't fly wink
I can understand some folk being discouraged...on several instances I have responded to a topic with what I had hoped was a humourous if not witty riposte bearing no malice only to have one of the more regular contributors really go to town in a not-very-friendly way. Perhaps we could set up a new site for Always Angry Swingers?. GSOH prohibited!!
