We haven't had a food thread in a while, but I had an idea for a bit of fun.
The plan is to get a new recipe - out of a book we already have, or off someone else or the web. One that we haven't tried before, especially if it uses a couple of new ingredients. Have a go at it and report back as to success and flavour and would we recommend it. It doesn't have to radical or even untasted but the key thing is, we have to not have made it before.
It could be a blast from the past - from Mother's recipe book, or something we have had on holiday. Or a home-made version of a familiar take-away.
I've only just thought of it, so I haven't decided on my recipe yet. I'll report back.
French Basque cake
My daughter is preparing menu's leading up to her mocks in catering and being asked this week to prepare two courses of her own choosing from any country. Well this week she decided on French. So, practicing at home we did a main of 'Confit of Salmon with Hollandaise sauce served with fresh vegetables as a main followed by French Basque cake served with Creme Fraiche.
The Basque cake was simple enough and quite a revelation and something that was new to me. Best I can describe it is that i was reminded of Bakewell tart without the pastry. It was quite lovely which is surprising really as in my mind French Desserts are, bar the odd exception, by and large pretty crap in comparison to British desserts.
Buffalo.
I bought buffalo sausages from the farmer's market and they were amazing. A little like beef but beefier and lower in fat. I'm going to get a joint to roast next time!
