New Laptop advice!

My current laptop is getting close to giving up the ghost. It takes an absolute age to boot it up and I get error messages at the start and error messages when I close down! The screen creaks when I open the lid and seems a little shaky, so I feel pretty soon it'll not support itself. It's got a 40Gb hard drive and if I leave all my Itunes on there, it's only got about 3-4Gb left!
So my question is - what laptop could you recommend? What do you have and what is it like? Good, bad or indifferent?
I see PCWorld are flogging some off for about 400 quid with 120Gb hard drive and a 2Gb memory - is that a good buy? Is there anything I should be specifically looking for or to be aware of?
Thanks for any help, guys drinkies and gals! :rose:

Hi Mal, I currently have a Dell Latitude.. and have no complaints. Got all my itunes loads of pics files.. you name it I have got it. Even makes coffee.
If I had the money though, I would buy a Mac.. cannot rate those highly enough... If you can, go on to the Apple website, they sell them off second hand on there too.. hope you find what you're looking for!
...........and what is the difference between a dedicated graphics card and shared graphics? would it be a dealbreaker if it has one and not the other????
lol

Hey Mal,
Just been helping a friend choose a new laptop. We checked out PC World, Staples, Curry's, Comet, Tesco, Tesco online and
In the end we found that a Toshiba Satellite A200- 1yo suited best. Aesthetically the best looking for the price it comes with Intel dual core, 2gig mem, 160gig hard drive (2x80 gig) and screen. £399 from with double clubcard points.

We tried an identical layout but different A200 model in Comet but although it was the same price it only had a 120gig hard drive wink
Others we considered were the Acer Aspire One from Amazon at £284 running Windows xp (or cheaper version running Linux lite) . Very sexy piece of kit and is very mobile with a 7” screen making it almost pocket size. Main draw backs were the screen size (although we tried it out in pc world and it was fine), and the lack of a CD/DVD drive meaning buying a separate at about £50 extra. That said makes an excellent second pc.

The other main contenders was the Acer Aspire 2920 at £399 but 12” screen and Acer Aspire 5920 15” screen at £379 both of which hard larger hard drives than the Toshiba at 250 gig but where of a lower aesthetic quality than the Toshiba. (both on the tesco site)
If you play games though then you would be better off looking in the £499 price range and over as most below that have low 3D graphic ratings.
Good luck
we got ours from laptops
you can have a look online then either order online or go to the shop in I think its huddersfield
The only thing with curry/comet places is that when something goes wrong and you take it back in they give you per minute phone number to ring because " we only sell on behalf of the makers" They dont care once you have bought from places like this and the customer service is rubbish....in my opinion
xx
Sometimes you can't beat the slightly cheaper ones. It depends on what you're wanting your laptop for of course.
A month or so ago I bought a Toshiba. It had 3GB memory and 250 GB hard drive. It was crap and I absolutely hated it.
I've had a make called EI Systems before and not a bit of bother and my current one is Compaq Presario which is part of the HP group I believe, it's only got 2GB memory and 200 GB hard drive but it's great and again not a bit of bother, it has a built in webcam and the quality is brill.
Personally I hate the Acer's. We bought my daughter one last year, the connectivity pin has snapped already, plus the laptop in my opinion is big and heavy, I prefer the smaller more compact ones.
Each to their own I guess - good luck anyway Mal! smile
We have been out this afternon  biggrin
And he bought one, it is currently being fiddled with, he will be in later.......... :D
Thanks for all your help, peeps. i took Blondes advice and got a pretty one
Actually I got an Acer Aspire with lots of things and something big and hard and a 17 inch screen - nearly as big as the couch I'm sat on!
I now need to transfer all my files from my other lappy - any hints? I have an external hard drive, so I think I can just backup my old one to that and then upload to my new one - will that work? My main concern is uploading my I-Tunes, which is about 22Gb, any tips on that so that it will still recognise my I-pod?

I got the Acer Aspire late last year for my Uni work and have to say it is a really fantastic laptop. Very easy to use, keyboard feels nice, screen is brilliant quality and battery lasts a decent amount of time.
im guessing your wireless? why not create a sharing folder, then send it all over to new laptop.
only just came in on thread, would have said look for bb company that are giving away free laptops.
xxx fem xx
I've been reading this thread with interest as ED needs to get herself a lappie before going to uni next month. Let us know if you're happy with it Mal wink

On the subject of shared/integral vs dedicated graphics.
Shared or Integrated means the graphics card uses some of the machine's main processor to work. Dedicated means it runs completely from its own processor.
You really only need dedicated if you are a serious gamer or are into generating animated graphics yourself.
Unfortunately my son needs a high power laptop for uni where he will be studying games programming - it'll cost a flaming fortune. LOL

Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Files & Settings Transfer Wizard
It may be in a slightly different place on a Vista machine, but a USB cable and that wizard will do exactly as you ask.

As for iTunes. Just install a new copy on the new machine then copy your iTunes folder in its entirety across to the new machine. You'll probably find though that the above transfer wizard will accomplish it too.

that's a booga!.. we've got a receipt but we're 6 months out of warranty and it's going to cost over £120 to fix. Not worth it in my opinion, rather save a bit more and get a new one when I'm ready
