London ! Doncha jass lav it ?? (That's the best Den Watts I can manage wink )
As a spur of the moment, off the cuff thought, I decided last night over dinner to come to London today.
It's absolutely years and years since I've been here.
Clearly, I've driven through and around, in continental type touring coaches and artics over the years, but not actually "been" if you kow what I mean.
I'm not alone, but do/did have a couple of hours to kill by myself.
Plan 'A' was to get a train/tubey thing/cab or even . . . . . . . a bus thingy from whee I'm staying, into sort of Central London/towny type place, do a little shirt shopping, maybe a pair of shoes. You know th kinda thing.
Trains.
I haven't been on a train for years.
I hear/read a lot of people moaning about trains. Times/late/dirty etc etc. And I know I was only on it for half an hour or so, but - I loved it. DiddlyDum DiddlyDum. Rocking to and fro. I was like a kiddy in a sweety shop. Beaming that beam that a few of you have seen. Listening to the Yahooooos camparing the latest ipidpod technologies and how "they" manage to compress so much data onto so little chips ??? (is that right?) dunno ) The inly thing that goes on my chips is salt. lol
The people.
People are just wierd.
If you say "Excuse me" because you want to pass someone that's in your way - they look at you as though you've got your head on backwards.
And when you say "Thank you" with a smile, they look at you as tough you have two heads.
It was cold when I left Derbyshire this morning, so I wore a sweat shirt type thing. My overnight bag is elsewhere, so I decided to nip into a shop and buy a lightweight shirt.
Thirtyseven and a half quid ????
Yer avina tin baaaarff ainctha mate ??? But somehow - there's no 't' in mate. (Den Watts again)
Sort of put paid to plan 'A' :lol2:
But - I managed today to realise one ambition/goal.
Here I am, sat in one of these internet cafes, logged on to my favourite site, drinking a chocolocolaatomatomocha coffee type drink, not smoking and just generally chillin.
Fuck ! ! ! ! Look at the time ! ! ! ! !
I've a train to catch ! ! ! !
Gotta get back "up west" :dunno:
See ya.
kiss
DiddlyDum DiddlyDum DiddlyDum DiddlyDum DiddlyDum DiddlyDum DiddlyDum Wooohoo ! !

what freaks me out every time I go to London is how people just walk straight at you if you are on a busy street. There seems to be no attempt by anyone to alter their path despite being on a collision course with you. Its pretty traumatic after half an hour of it. I suppose down there its just so busy that they are used to it.... but I feel a right outsider everytime I go.
confused
Mind you, there's a Gregg's the Bakers shop at the train stations now so if I buy a stottie cake i'll be alright. wink

Dammie ya Grockel :bounce: Bluddy good to hear you're having a nice time!!! :bounce: Must admit I like trains too - but then I only ever see the first five mins of me journey - before I'm rocked to sleep, with me head jangling on the window, Z's coming out in capital letters, with a line of drool down me chin :undecided: Kinda makes you glad it is such an anonymous place :uhoh:

I used to work for a large retailer and went to a meeting actually at Waterloo station (cos they had one of their shops there) When I got off the train I realised I was all suited and booted, but had forgot my tie - mad
So, had to buy one, looked around the "concourse" type area, and could only find a van heusen shop with some lovely shirts for £60 - £70.
Anyway, found a tie that matched my lilac shirt and navy suit - took it to the cashier and parted with £45  for a fcuking tie !!
On the flip side, was invited to a christening at the last minute, and didn't have a suit, so went out in Cardiff to go buy one - got one I really liked and it only cost £49 !!!!!!!!!

I hate "that London", me.
Mind you, I don't really like cities. Bar for a weekend, at most.
Only compo I have for going to the smoke is not having to pay congestion charge, as you don't pay for a m/cycle, or if you have a disabled-class tax disc. Which I have on my car.
Still not worth it, though.

London luv it, luv it,. luv it!
Black 'tube' nose as i call it, the manic driving in the city, the one way systems in the city confused , tons of things i love about it, its spralling shops, history, landmarks, so cosmo, even the 'strange' people you see when walking around the streets, all walks of life.
But its the quirkiness of the place that makes it appealing to me, if it was all clinical, organised, smart, polite (althought i agree arrogant tossers we can do without but then you get them everywhere) wouldnt that be boring......if all cities were the same what would be the point of travelling?
The best way of travelling around London is by motorbike, years ago my courier mate and I went on a Jack the Ripper tour, visiting all the spots he commited the 'acts', I remember one place was completely untouched, yet others rebuilt on, but it was fascinating. This is just one small reason why I love London.
But then again im biased, im an Islington girl....sorry that should be pronounced is-lin-on. wink I think I must be a city girl cos I also loved New York and Manchester, didnt like Los Angeles thou, souless and heartless place. rolleyes

It's even worse for us foreigners over here - Cockney or Geordie is like a different language altogether.

Do you know the worst thing with London?
All those people who don't live here, coming in for a holiday or the day, and filling it up!
If it weren't for them, it'd be a great place.
It is a busy city, certainly. People here normally travel a minimum of 60 minutes from their house to their place of work. Some are lucky and travel less, some travel more. The biggest regular commute I did was 100 minutes each way. So they don't have a lot of spare time.
You try to catch a train in the morning rush hour. If you aren't within 2 stops of the start point, you stand for your whole journey. Then home again.
Why do we do it, you might ask.
Because it is one of the most vibrant cities in the world. You can get most anything you want, most hours of the day. The food is great. The buzz is great. It is THE place to be, whatever anyone else says. London is a great place after say 9pm, when all the trippers have gone home. Visit Carlucci's, or visit one of the great museums on a late night, or take in one of nearly a hundred shows or concerts.
FemBernie and I went to see a revitalised Gogol play two weeks ago - tomorrow we are going to see one of the international premieres of a budding new playwright at the Barbican Centre. In early November I am going to the RFH to hear Michael Tilson-Thomas lecture on Tchaikovski's early works, and the following day sitting in the same seat to hear MTT and the LSO play Tchaikovski's Overture: The storm, Violin Concerto and Manfred Symphony. No doubt FemBernie and I will be taking in another comedy at one of the other theatres before the end of the year.
Yes it might be busy. Yes it might be impersonal. But I wouldn't live anywhere else.
If you say "Excuse me" because you want to pass someone that's in your way - they look at you as though you've got your head on backwards.
And when you say "Thank you" with a smile, they look at you as tough you have two heads.

That's probably because they don't understand a word you are saying. If you spoke proper English, you'd be OK. biggrin

I absolutely love London.....it's got everything and there is so much to do, it is a little pricey but it's fantastic when you know what to do and where to go.
The thing I don't like is the people..... Southerners in general.
It seems that down south people are just not friendly. I have lived in the south all my life and it always amazes me when I venture out further afield that people actually talk to each other, acknowledge each other and are generally more polite and friendly.
You can't say hello to someone or give eye contact here without them looking at you strangely. Hold a door open for someone and you'd probably expect a thank you - not down south! Someone bumps into you? You'd expect a "sorry", not here! Smile at someone and they think you're mad as a hatter.
Obviously I'm generalising here but thats what I've seen in my 24 years down south. Agreed, not everyone is like it but the vast majority, in my limited experience are.
I generally try to be friendly and at least acknowledge people or try to start conversations but it doesn't go very far.
Apart from the little old ladies who always seem to accost me in the street and talk - I like that, it puts a smile on my face. loon smile

According to Mark and Lard ( when they was on Radio 1 ) Manchester was the Capital of England ( and where they broadcasted from, naturally ) and London was that nice nice, quaint village you might visit, if you were touring with The Shire Horses / The Mighty Horse / any other of their bands!
Ergo, your confusion is uderstandable, but totally unwarrented! Why move away from the capital, Judy?

I live in london, work in london , shag in london.
London is a strange place i lived here for 21 years out of my 24 years. London is full of wiered and wonderful people.
Sometimes i must admit people on the tube can be rude ignorant w*******s. The reason for this is normally because the tube system is unrealiable so these upsets people.
London is great for food, great for drink.
Yes it is expensive living hear but I am so used to it now that when i go else where i am shocked at the cheapness of it all.....
