I'm a Southerner born and bred. I've also lived for short periods in North Staffs, Yorks, Lincs and the West Midlands. I dont really feel an affiliation with the South per se, and loved every minute I spent up north.
Some things are better up there, some things are better down here. Hows that for a spot of fence sitting!

Ignoring the Polish argument - this thread was about Northerners being told to move south.

These 'think tank' people are certifiable cretins.

 Foxy!
I don't understand why we are all of a sudden debating immigration.
This was one of those threads that had the potential to be great.
C'mon you northerners... get posting!! wink
its just like the current government, everytime there is an issue they have to divert to cheapshot talks of immigration, they even blame polish for climate change...
I have lived in the North and South. Quality of life was better up there...in terms of the sea and countryside...but no jobs in my area of work.
I can not believe that people up north are more friendly than southerners. It depends where you are...I met quite a few people up north that judged me on my fairly well spoken southern accent! I found that level of sterotyping quite frustrating...wasn't used to it having grown up in London!

Its pretty neat that we can debate this issue cos it wasnt that long ago that we might feel a bit uncomfortable speaking our minds. But at least new labour now says that your not raving nazi if you are concerned about immigration.
People have always migrated from the north to the south for economic reasons its nothing new, I would rather be served coffee, taken by cabbie, sold a car by someone who speaks english and is emotionally connected to this country than the alternative. If someone comes down here from say manchester at least the wealth stays here and is not sent to prop up someone elses economy. And I must say that using cheap labour from eastern europe is hardly a new idea hitler did it back in the thirties which says reams for new labour (old nazi perhaps).
I wonder who really gains from imported labour from eastern europe anyway, cos if employers are using cheap workers they are not passing the savings onto the customer they are keeping the money as profit, exploiting the poverty of migrant workers who then claim family tax credits and send it back home.
Even frank field labour mp says "we did'nt remove the economic borders so people in hampsted could have a cheap polish gardener."
The hypocrosy of the ruling class in this country is asolutely breathtaking.

is that the same as saving money to go on foreign holidays,i cant understand why polish workers has become the main issue of the debate
Maybe polish workers have become embrioled in the debate because the general issue of economic migrants. As there are a large number working here. And uk residents going on holiday is not in my opinion comparable to the wealthy exploiting eastern europeans for cheap labour, forcing them to claim additional benefits at the counties expence. Why should the tax payer subsidise big or small business. Sorry but I fail to see why we should do that and bolster the economes of other countries when people in this country are facing huge tax rises, old people cannot afford to heat their homes, and large numbers of people are losing their homes.

Well thousands of Poles in Scotland, in the garage my pal works in there are three, working for lower wages, that is three scottish mechanins out of work, and there are laods in the building trade, again, undercutting locals, and they do nothing for the local economy, as the money goes back to poland.

Sorry mate but if you don't think bringing the price of labour down isn't doing something for the economy then you need to do some reading up.
Part of the problem plaguing dodgy economies these days is the rising price of everything. The two biggest culprits for the rise in prices is transport and labour. You decrease either or both of those and it has a beneficial effect on the economy. Production costs come down, purchase costs come down, inflation comes down.
Part of the problem in this country is people wanting more and more for doing less and less, now we're paying the price after decades of spiralling labour costs. If there's a culture of migrant workers bringing down those labour costs then that's a good thing.
Though I am in agreement that economic migration is having a detrimental effect on British jobs, it does have to be said that we are the architects of our own problems.
As for not doing anything for the local economy? Do they get their food and clothes etc flown in from Poland?
Ohhh I love it when you talk politics hump
God I am strange aren't I redface

I dont get this comment at all. So far no one has said anything vaguely derogetory about polish people. So far all that has been said is that they work hard and get exploited by amoral employers and have to claim family credit to survive. Of coarse that will continue as long as people illude to racism every time someone speaks about the issue. Playing the race card helps no one especially workers from all countries.

wasnt this ment to be about jobs? and the availability of them?
i know people from north will praise the north etc etc, and alot of people when thinking south think only of london, but im in cornwall and take offense to this turing into a we're better than them debate.
people from different cultures,geographcally,religiously,how/who raised them will all contribute to how they act/ react.
there are twats all over the country as well as nice people.
xx fem xx

See, I reckon this is what it should have turned into... wink
...then we could've had odes to the flat cap, whippets and true northern grit and you lot down there could've eulogised what makes your bit of the south just peachy and well, it might've been a bit of fun!!
lol Or at least it may have given me some ideas of where to go on my next holiday. Never been to Cornwall actually, am told it's beautiful.

2012 is not all in London .... an example
The 2012 Games will be everyone's Games, with opportunities for everyone in all regions to join in.
in the North East
Olympic sports:
Football
Venues:
St. James' Park, Newcastle2012
in the North West
Olympic sports:
Football
Venues:
Old Trafford, Manchester
· Scotland - Nations and Regions Group
Information about plans to maximise the benefits of the Games for you.
· Scotland map of potential Pre-Games Training Camps
Download a map showing the location and number of facilities to be included in the Pre-Games Training Camp Guide (500KB)
· Hampden Park
Find out how Glasgow's Hampden Park will play a part in the Football tournament in 2012

I only googled 2012 London Olympics and clicked on Football. Apparently the bigger stadiums through out the UK are being used not just the ones in London.

okay... the on topic stuff with regards to this...... remember that other british cities did bid for olympic games before london did....... but how sexy is to someone from abroad if you say..... right you can have the olympics in birmingham/manchester...... or you can have the games in london?
remember that manchester bid for the games twice before it decided to try for the commonwealth games instead.....
with regards to this north/south stuff... as an cockney/yank who bolted for the glorious north years ago, I am sure surveys like this only take into account the economic value, and not the "standard of life" issues
okay.... now the off topic business..... if people want to move to another counrty to make a better life then i have no problems with that.... the polish and eastern europeans come here not always taking the jobs of the indiginous population, but also the jobs that some people turn there noses at and wont do.....
there was the great documentary on migrants where people who were unemployed were complaining about a lack of jobs..... but when they were offered ones fruit picking, they refused to do it, and rather take the dole money......
