I know it's a strange request for in here but has anyone got any experience of building a garden railway in LGB, I'm building one for Bubbly's kids.
Any advice gratfully recieved
Sparky
what sort of advice are you looking for sparks?
mainly what to lay the track on etc, pete, wiring no prob, have loco's and track
You can lay your track straight onto the lawn, which usually is not very flat! You can put it onto wood, concrete, bricks, paving slabs, railway sleepers, gravel … anything which provides a solid track bed.

The ground? lol
I don't know much about tracks but would it not be best to lay them on gravel then anchored down to little blocks of concrete ?
Tony
the other debate is do i put the track at ground level or raise it up a bit, at any rate looks like i'm up for a bit of civil engineering, any one fancy a trip to sheerness to help lol

I would raise it just enough to stop tiny feet from being on the track but not so high that tiny fingers will be on it either......
Although a little bridge maybe over a small pond would be nice biggrin

I'm a pc engineer not a metal worker or electrician  Although i am quite good at making things and did used to be a designer for something larger than garden trains :D
I would be happy to try it out though

Big enough, just trying to fit the kids around the track
ok, first, you need to make sure you have adequate drainage, otherwise you will cause voids in the track
then you have to make sure the track sits on suitable ballast, which, once laid, has to be tamped, preferably with a wacker plate
then, lay the sleepers, with a spacing of approx 12", there should be 22 in a chains length (for those that dont know old measurements, a chain is equal to 22 yards, theres 80 chain in a mile)
then the rail has to be placed on the sleeper chairs, and clipped into place
then the gauge has to be measured, the space between the 2 rails is 4ft 8.5"
obviously, thats a simplified guide, any questions, pm me
You will be wanting to put a station in next, then a town lol
