well blue, interestingly enough they were made from bronze. which is a bit expensive these days, being an alloy of copper and tin, so the cost of the metals are actually greater than the face values of the 1 and 2p coins. yer silver coins are of course made from cupro-nickel, which is basically a copper alloy with a bit of nickel to make 'em harder and shinier! oh and makes 'em look silver obviously, cos coppers kinda brown.

On a similar note, US coins are a pain in the butt as they have no numbers on them, other than a year, sometimes.
OK, they call one cent coins 'pennies', but then there are dimes and nickels. WTF are they? I could figure out what a quarter is, but you shoulda seen me trying to buy cigs (not fags) over there. Money? Feck it. I told my brother-out-law that it didn't matter, as it was just Monopoly money, anyway. He's just about speaking to me, now.

Curiously, I had a similar conversation with an American friend of mine this morning. I have just come back from there and had an absolute nightmare sorting out one note from another (they're the same size and colour) - I asked her how she could quickly tell one from another and she told me that she used to keep them all folded in same value groups. What a faff!!
It got me wondering though - What if you were blind?? At least here all the notes are different sizes.

Was asking a blind customer, in the bank where I work, the self same. He says that they did Braille the notes, but once they've been in circulation for a day or so, they get worn down.
He likes our notes and coins, not only because of the size differences, but he says the paper texture is noticable different between different values, too.
