Hi all
Well this morning about 10:00 am my lad comes down the stairs and says
“oh dad, I just bought a car. “
“ have you lad? Well done”
“erm, could you run me over there to pick it up?”
“yeah np, I’ll get me coat, where is it”
“Hull dad”

So after several hours of getting things like the spare tyre, the tool kit, checking the oil and water etc etc, we are about ready, we have decided to leave at about 7:00 pm for our epic journey and will stay off the motorway as much as possible as we are in no particular hurry.
I was wondering if any of you lovely folks had any suggestions for decent watering holes / caffeine stops places to visit along the way etc.
We would have stopped at the lakes and kipped in the cars on the way back to do a bit of sightseeing, but I’m getting too old for car kipping, besides its bloody freezing, so looks like a same night turnaround :roll:
Any current snow conditions would be useful too.
Oh and if anyone fancies a chat to keep me awake, pm for mobile number.

If it had been anywhere near Wigan, we would definately have provided a caffine stop, but sorry cant really help.

Well we survived our epic adventure, but sadly not unscathed, more on that later.
We left home at around six, having decided to spurn the motorways because as the lad pointed out, “ they are boring “ rolleyes
After a certain amount of buggering around in hyperspace, (otherwise known as North Gloucestershire) a meeting of the route committee was held and after some discussion it was agreed that the purchase of a reasonably good map may be of value to the expedition.
We found a caffeine stop and having purchased said map ( :shock: ) we were finally on the right track
Cruising along someone struck up a chord and all manor of old tunes were lustrously sung with some of the most ridicules lyrics you have ever heard, loads of la la lala la’s to fill in long forgotten words.
We were in mobile contact with SH base camp in the delectable form of Darkfire so nothing could go wrong, could it? Well despite the finely honed navigational skills of my co-pilot (who will remain nameless for the ssake of my health) we suddenly found ourselves heading in entirely the wrong direction.
Me - We’re going west :shock: do we want to go west? isn’t Hull on the east coast?
Navigator - “ no were not, we’re heading north, its fine just keep going”
Me - “nope, we are definitely heading west, I’m going to take the next right and see where it goes”
I’ll leave the rest to your imagination redface
Ok to try and keep an already too long a story a little shorter I will skip the details of that detour and the embarrassing hoots of derisory laughter when it turns out that we end up back exactly where expedition leader Pete-sw said “I’m gonna turn right here” surprisedops:
By this time I was in contact with Dark at regular intervals and we had decided that it would be nice to have a quick meet to say hello (as some of you know Caron and I have had quite a soft spot for Dark for time now so an opportunity too good to miss.)
Anyway, much frivolity and piss taking later, mainly at the expense of my sense of direction, we hit the Leicester bypass and are off up the A46 arranging our rendezvous with Dark at a small place a few miles ahead.
Suddenly double disaster strikes, firstly we hit a diversion, the entire A46 is closed and we are diverted towards Nottingham on the A606, I manage to fire off a quick signal to Dark giving a sit rep when disaster # two strikes, my battery dies :shock:
“No problem” they cried, “we have two more” :roll:
“ok piss taking smartarses”( I've got the hump now) “and how do we retrieve Darks number off a now dead mobile”
Silence and dumb looks were the only reply.
As it turns out, all is not lost as the other end of the diversion dumps us exactly a mile from where we had arranged to meet, so with joy in our hearts we speed of to the RV, now having exchanged descriptions and reg of respective vehicles we park in a very open location on the approach to the RV and wait, and wait, and wait.
Alas it was not to be . Dark if you are reading this, not sure how we missed you babes, but deepest apologies hun, we waited as long as we could, but had to bear in mind that we still had a long way to go and folk the other end were waiting to go to bed.
The rest of the trip was pretty uneventful, and we finally arrived in new Holland at about 012:30 hours. #2 son is now the proud owner of a shiny new motor car (thank feck, maybe I can have mine back now) and after a few more adventures we arrived home worn out tired, very disappointed at having missed such a golden opportunity, but at least in one piece.
Total travelling time, 14 hours :roll:
And let this be a lesson to you all :roll:

Sorry for the laughing Pete, but it sounds like one of our outings!
Glad you all got back safely and at least the disasters were ones you can recover from!

rotflmao :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao: well I had a little jaunt to Worksop...... waited there a while, nipped over toward Lincoln thinking ....' well, they gotta come back down this way!! lol ' ... got bored, drove back, ....spent 10 minutes moaning to friend in Huddersfield on the phone ...diverted back to Nottingham, Mansfield, Chesterfield..... ended up calling anyone I know in the area at , got lost, twice, discovered certain North Derbyshire Village , realised didnt have a certain persons number rolleyes ..... found a familiar area in Chesterfield.... another certain person didnt answer phone...... found another familiar area just outside Chesterfield......that person was away down in Northants..... and I gave up and went bloody home!!!!!!!!

Great stuff Pete, but it only goes to prove that motorways may be boring but at least they go relatively straight to where you want to go, but I do prefer the suck it and see approach that you guy's took, pity about missing DF though.

knew by one of ya texts that you were well up past Bingham luv, so did a detour to Worksop cos that was ya next stop rolleyes , only it wasnt was it, cos you decided to follow some god damn diversion onto the wrong bloody road :roll: :roll: lol
mind you, it was funny. I was doing the A50 (???????????????????) at 100mph in the pitch black, no one round for miles, singing my head of in the car to BonJovi....even considered the local dogging spot cos i was THAT pissed off !! Half the site think's I'm a complete nutter ringing them at stupid o'clock saying 'put kettle on mate I'll be there in 10 mins!' and I even stopped off at a services somewhere between Lincoln and Nottingham and had a coffee with a trucker while looking for ES on the offchance!! :lol:
Almost ran over a fox, saw a couple of owls and pushed my car to her absolute limit, smoked wayyyyy too much, knackered me fag lighter.........you have noooo idea how gutted I am !! :lol: :roll:

I know what you mean tonup. And yes we did the motorway thing on the way back, funnily enough, it didn’t save us any time :shock:
Mind you that could have had something to do with a little confusion over the Birmingham thing which I wont go into right now because its really boring and no-one wants to hear about it :whistling:

Sounds like you had quite a trip. Probably ranks with the one we did to Redruth (Cornwall) and back a few weeks ago. That was a real marathon!
