A question for all you lovely pierced people out there biggrin
I have to remove all my piercings on Tuesday. How long can they be out before closing up?
I've had a couple of them for several years and have only ever removed them to change them, so they've never been out for any length of time.
Thanks
Jas

Depends where abouts they are.... I found my tongue healed up after a couple of hours when i took it out. Although there was a slight infection so that could have been the reason. My 'outer' body piercings are usually ok for a couple of days.
Depends on the area I suppose, my ears stay open, my navel doesn`t (haven`t timed how long it takes to close though) Don`t worry about it, if anything seals over, just pierce the bugger again!
I`ve done my navel a few times.

What a coincidence - I was just going to post the same question
I have to remove mine for an MRI on my spine scan next week and wonder if it would be ok to wear flexible plastic piercing bars to stop mine healing over?
I recently removed my tongue piercing for less than an hour and it was a devil of a job getting the bar back in even after such a short time confused
I hope my hood piercing will be fine for a couple of hours, as well the nose one, but my tongue is the one I know will give me probs.
So if anyone knows about MRI scans and if the plastic bars will affect it, perhaps they could let me know . Would the plastic show up on the scan? If not, then I may wear one in my hood just to be on the safe side, as I could do without awkward questions about the "strange little white thing on your genital region" if it is likely to show up redface lol

I don't know Jas but are you sure you need to remove them?
I had a chest x-ray a couple of months back and they allowed me to keep my rings in dunno

I've been told no jewellery at all, not even earrings

I'm a guy with a PA piercing which I've had for about 15 years now.
I could take it out for a month or two without any problem Haven't tried longer but then I prefer to have it in. I feel lost without it!
:bounce: :bounce:
i sometimes dont have a ring in my belly button for weeks at a time.. and its always fine.
my ears have never closed up either... i have to say though.. when i had my nose done years ago.. it closed up within a few days.
so the answer is........ i have no idea!!!!!!!!! confused
A plastic bar shouldn't affect the scanner but they may want it out to get a better pic!! Just do whatever they want you to!
Ok the reason you have to take piercings out (and all other jewelry) for an MRI... is because it uses a very very powerful electromagnet (hence the name Magnetic Resonance Imaging). The magnet is actualy powerful enough to make metal medical instruments fly all the way accross the room when it is turned on. Now besides completely buggering up the picture if you left any metal piercings in they would get IMEDIATELY ripped from your body and attached to the scanner      Try explaining that one in A&E
You should check with the hospital, but as long as the PTFE (plastic)piercing is all plastic with no metal components at all, I see no reason for it causing problems.
I am sure they get lots of people with tounge piercings who ask the same question (that goes for other piercings tooo)
BTW Tounges do close up in about an hour because the tounge heals very fast, mainly due to the amount of punishment it has to take... after all if you bit your tounge and it didn't heal right away it would seriously affect your ability to eat, and quickly become infected.

I had a chest x-ray too... x-rays are not so succeptable to metal (it just shows up as white on the film)... hence they can x-ray you to see whats going on with anything metal lodged inside of you.
When I had my chest x-ray they just asked if I had a neck chain. As the radiation beam is very tightly focused they don't care about anything that isn't in the line of fire between the x-ray plate and the machine because it won't show up.
In answer to your piercing question I can only add that it seems to be an individual thing, but here's my experience: Earrings, in & out, sometimes out for months on end, no worries. Belly bar, took it out for four days, it healed up, back to get it repierced, major haemorrhaging all over the street, kids being sick, most unpleasant! It's back in now & that's where its staying! VCH, never had it out, but my piercer says don't try unless you're going to just clean the area & put new jewellry in. I live in a small fishing town, & most folks round here if they're going for x-rays etc., remove any metal piercings & thread it with a short length of 8lb fishing line & just tie the ends together. Easy then to put the jewellry back in when you get home. Good luck!! AnG
