Plagiarism or just coincidence?

I've noticed for some time now that a significant (well it must be 'cos I noticed it) number of peeps, when they join SH, pick user names which are quite close in some respects to those of an existing longer term user.
Maybe it's just a coincidence but I wondered whether this was deliberate? dunno
I'm just thinking now, if I changed my name to page3crumpet (or something similar) if the phone would ring with an offer from one of the gutter tabloids? :bounce: :bounce:
Or am I just dreaming? :undecided:
More to the point, has anyone else noticed this phenomenon?
PS I shall continue to administer a smackbottom to anyone who uses the word "eager" in any of their posts.
redface surprisedops:
I agree.
there are some who's names are too similar to, say, bluexx or Mal, for example.
oooh has anyone taken EagerBeaver??
there's a good one!
can you help it ES if they all flock to your shrine?
You not the first to notice eager smile I could not name names, but a few newbee names have initially made me think they were long term mates, until I read more closely...
Of course it could be a honest mistake :) Will wait till we get a tallnhaired...

Oi I wrote this earlier!!!!!!!!!!
Bet not too many people dare use the word "EASY" as part of their nickname, just in case Mr Stelios (sp) takes them to court over it!!

Has eagerslut plagiarised your plagiarism post??
So does this mean we should all start taking up any names that could be like our own? Stop these counterfeit names being used against us. They are all against us aren't they?

Well I think you should get the name change ball rolling by changing yours to "Cactus".
It's got a RL pedigree as well if you remember what happened when I was in a garden centre one day and called out "tallnhairy"!! wink
lol
ES,
I was so eager to reply to this that I nearly tripped over myslut on the floor!
There was a user using the id biwelshfemale who got confused with me in the chatroom on more than one occasion (poor cow lol), so I am aware of this 'phenomenon' lol.
I wouldn't worry about it though..it's kinda flattering that someone might have plagarised my name..then again it could be coincidence..then again does anyone really care ? ? dunno
Hope this helps..but I doubt it very much ;)

I don't think it's likely that people are trying to make you think they're someone else. I think what's more likely is simply that someone tries to sign up with a particular name, sees that the name is already taken, and changes a character or two instead of trying something different, hence you've got about four million variations of Blue Eyes for example. confused

There was someone using the nick tracey-jayne in the chatroom several months ago. Only difference was she spelt hers with an *e* in Tracey and I don't
It seems she had been going in during the early hours of the morning, causing havoc and people thought it was me!!!
It is said imitation is a form of flattery . . . well in this case it wasn't confused
When I happened to encounter her in one night I asked why she used that nick and she said she had seen it on forum and liked it so decided to use it
She then asked me why I had chosen it too, so after explaining it is my own name, I was told she wasn't prepared to change hers so it was tough rolleyes
Personally I would have thought if someone wants to stand out from the crowd, they could come up with a name which is unlike anyone else's. Plagerising another nick smacks of lack of imagination surely?
Tracy-Jayne
If anyone wants to come close to westerross they're welcome
When you mention this - yes I have to agree with you ES. I do not think it is being done for any dubious reasons however apart from the fact that some folk have no immagination.
As the old saying goes however, copying one person's work is plagiarism but copying the work of two people is research!

Yes I remember this happening although I didn't realise she had been arsey about it sad
I never had the opportunity (sp?) to ask biwelshfemale how she decided on her nick as she seemed to be in chat (like yours) in the early hours...
I will admit to asking a few friends to 'keep an eye out' for me in chat as initially I was suspicious (she didn't admit to not being me to a few ppl :? ) but no harm has come of it smile
While I do agree with your last statement to some extent-unless there is evidence that someone is trying to be like you ( for whatever reason) surely most of the' plagarised' nicks would be down to coincidence or, like Ice said , a lot of people with blue eyes ;)
Of course there will be people who might take their inspiration for a nick too closely from an 'established' user but as I have said unless they are trying to pass themselves off as someone else (on here?..never lol) I can't see the harm it in biggrin

Can I come as well Tune ..can I ..can I.... :bounce:
(Packs rucksack, sleeping bag, stove) so where we off to?
Well, there are 142 mikes registered. Are they taking the mike? rolleyes
er well mine not close to anyone's innocent
If someone is registered and doesn't use the service, does the user name ever get taken off for reuse?
I don't think I've got any worries about anyone plagiarising my name, I doubt many people have heard of the band Mad At Gravity.

There are a few other mads, but no, you're right.

I must admit I had not noticed how eager some people were to copy others but what I did notice was some guy posting stories in here using the name Tania which now confuses his fantasies with my fantastic realities (or real fantasies?) rolleyes
