As many of you will know i was dragged kicking and screaming to a New Model Army concert tonite by my ever loving and understanding wife.
Having no more than a handfull of their studio tracks froma career spanning some 25 years, and likeing preciously none of them, I must confess to arriving at the concert with some regret at having forgotten my ipod but............
Hey they weren't half bad !
Now don't get me wrong I ain't about to rush out and order their entire back catologue from hmv online............. but I wasn't dissapointed at all. They were very tight musically and the atmosphere was great.
Which leads me to the point in this posting, has anyone had a similar experience, prejuging a band on the strength of a few tracks only to find that they were no where near as bad as ya thought ? ?
Well, I had the opposite once.
i took a fab fab lady to see Santana and she fell asleep after 30 minutes.
She was not that fab after that ............
Don't hold this against me, I am ashamed to admit it, but back in the late '80s, before his sick tendencies were known, I was dragged along to a Gary Glitter Christmas gang show by a friend who was stuck with an extra ticket he couldn't get rid of.
I started the night standing at the back determined not to enjoy it, but by the end I was down the front singing and dancing with the rest.
Such innocent times!
A old friend of mine only ever listened to New Model Army and I mean only New Model Army never known anyone else so into one group. I think they bothered the charts back in 1985ish with sommot like the 51st state of America. Unless I’m very much confused.
Went to see Kid Creole and the Coconuts some years ago but about 15 years after they charted, I was not looking forward to it. They blew the place away, fantastic show, for a kind of novelty 80’s act these boys can play. As for the coconuts well, I didn’t know it at the time but the word MILF fitted the bill.
Never been to see a gig i wasn't looking forward to, but i have been disappointed by a band i expected a lot more from. Went to see Ultravox in the mid eighties, really looked forward to it for months, but came away feeling i'd wasted my money - they were awful! Also saw The Cult supporting Big Country at Birmingham NEC and they were better than the headline act.
