Don't understand it, but Iv'e just received an email from Doncaster Police, warning me not to open the email they sent me as it may contain a virus.
In attempting to print it out, I am afraid I lost it as it disappeared from my screen. No idea how they got my email address and wonder if it was genuine.
Suppose they do monitor this site, but cannot understand why they should contact me, as I don't have a police record and am not a criminal.
Just thought I would mention it, as if they are showing an interest in the site, it may affect all of us in some way and to be forwarned is to be forarmed.
Lofty The Police may have sent the e-mail out as a general posting to any number of people....I can assure you though with offences against children on the rise, anti social behaviour in the headlines and public order offences to be dealt with it is highly unlikely they will have set up a department to monitor a perfectly legal site! smile

Then again they could of had the netsky virus, realised it, and sent emails out to all those who they think have passed one on to. It probably is nothing.
The chances of it being genuine are very slim. Unless you know somebody from the Doncaster Police station then they shouldn't be sending you an email.
This site probably is monitored but that doesn't mean random emails will be sent out to select users.
Lofty hi!
i wouldn't worry about it all. most likely either a virus somehow propagating thru a sequence of email address lists and somehow the two of you were linked. or it's someone spoofing an official looking address hoping you'll then open a viral attachment. i've had loads from all kinds of 'originators'!
the chances of the police, in the course of anything official whatsoever, using your email as a contact are pretty much nil i'd have thought. they tend to either use the mail for notifications of offences, or the courts will issue a summons by mail at their request. or two guys in dodgy suits will knock at your door at odd hours of the early morning ( so i'm told! ;-) no ok i was a witness in a trial just in case you were wondering )
personally, despite the protestations of mods etc, i've no doubt that the site is monitored on a casual basis, but the Operation Ore kinda thing where they've tracked web users of VERY dodgy sites generally results in a heavy handed raid with PC seizure etc, or a polite request to attend your local police station with ya missus!. certainly NOT tipped off by a preliminary e-mail!!! ( my mum's a sex offence probation officer, so i know a bit about these things!!! lol )
best deleted and forgotten!!!
neil
This has happened before. I was sent a pm once by a worried member of the site that had received this through e-mail:
PLEASE CALL IN TO YOUR NEAREST STATION WITH A COPY OF THIS ADD TO SAVE ANY EMBARRESSMENT OF US COMING TO YOU.
YOUR ADDRESS HAS BEEN LOGGED AND DETAILS RECORDED SO CHANGING YOUR EMAIL WILL NOT WORK.
STAFFORDSHIRE

If anybody else receives anything like this then please just delete it and forget about it. Someone is trying to wind you up.

No protestations from ANY of the Mods - we KNOW the site is monitored by all sorts of people from both sides of the law and including the law. We have no problem with it and work our socks off to keep this site legal and free. There's a thread somewhere which I started about this very subject.
biggrin
I would not open the email, because it will be full of viruses and someone is using the Doncaster Police email to infect. Well that is what I think anyway. Not that I know much about these things, but I believe that is what happens. lol
Lofty,
I agree with Neil, it is more likely to be connected with the netsky virus, which is still doing the rounds. I have deleted 6 emails at work today from people who we have never heard of before and all were infected with the virus.... Good job we have a very good Anti-virus software installed....
My advice??...... Forget about it......... As long as you have Anti-virus software on your computer then you have nothing to worry about... And as for the Police turning up on your doorstep..... make sure you have your best Y-Fronts on, if you dont have any ask Roger if you can borrow some......... wink
