Something for everbody to get thier teeth into.
With the local elections over and the lowest turnout rate in history, my question is;
Should it be law that you have to vote?
NO :shock:
Proportional representation I say.....

NOPE NOPE NOPE mad
Totally silly idea, do we really, really want more of the money that *should* be spent on the NHS and other stuff to go towards policing this daft notion... if someone chooses not to vote then that in itself is sending a message to the law makers of the day... I'm guessing that the main reason people don't vote is because of intertia and boredom...
as soon as something develops, like a party or policy that the majority dislike... the voters will be back... the pendulum doth swing back and forth.
Something that has got my goat recently is this thing about councils being allowed to obtain buildings empty for over six months... not sure about the facts here to be honest. However, if you have a child that is soon going to college and you've earmarked the house for that purpose... lucky kid though... and you don't want the hassle of renting out the property... the council could just take it? Is that right or is that the Daily Express version?
Cheers! smile

No... for a couple of reasons....but If you decide not to vote which is your democratic right, i don't see how you can then complain if you choose not to exercise that right.... me personally i vote because there are millions around the world who don't have the chance to...i see it as a gft
however i think the system needs to change, since out of the 650 constiuences in the U.K, there is only a genuine "contest" in about 150-170 of them which means in all the others you could have a donkey wearing a red/blue/yellow rosette and it would win...
Pure "proportional represention" wouldn't work as de sade said earlier.... plus it doesn't lead to stable government (see italy as an example, that have had 50 different governments since the 2nd world war)
i do like the idea of p.r in a regional sense..... split the seats up into counties and assign the seats accordinly ....then have p.r at a more local level......that would also make sure that smaller parties dont get seats as they may well have done on a national scale.....
wow.. enough politics for one day!!!!
is the chatroom working!!!!!! smile:):):)

I really can't see that any attempt to force people to vote would ever work or be introduced. Goverments often attempt to bring extra people to the polling booths with policies designed purely for that reason, leagalisation of cannabis 24hr drinking etc are only ever debated in any major way on the eve of an election and are done entirely to bring out young voters. The problems come from the belief that all political parties are the same once in power and a lack of trust in the system. You would have thought that issues such as Nuclear power, war in Iraq, immigration policies would be big enough and important enough to bring out voters and yet my friends seem to hold little or no interest in these issue. Education is the only way of increasing voters and hopefully we will see an increase in voters as the current crop of youngsters come of age.
As for proportional representation surely in the fully intergrated society we are trying to push towards this wouldn't be an issue as cultural barriers break down, and any attempt to go down this route would encourage people to believe once again that the middle class white male is being desciminated against and therefore push there votes towards BNP UKip etc. And how do you decide what constitutes a minority group anyway. I certainley don't want to be grouped in with evey other young white middleclass males as my beliefs differ greatly from my peer group.
