If you use biodiesel it will be the transesterified oil, the viscosity will be the same as pump diesel. The lubrication properties will be better than pump diesel. My ford diesel runs on 50% bio-50% pump, no problem.
As for hydrogen, commercially it is produced by breaking the hydrogen/carbon molecule in methane by the use of steam. It makes little difference, using hydrogen is more energy intensive and wasteful than using petrol. And it still needs oil.
Whichever way they/you go, it will not be as economical as oil/petrol.
At the end of the day/decade/century, you will have to decide whether you really want a car, or food and heat.
Even if your car runs from battery, it has to be charged. The energy to move your vehicle depends on its weight. You won't use less energy, and it still has to come from somewhere. So the power stations need to produce enough extra energy to power say ... 20 million cars using say .. 60kwh. Ahh...I hear you say...use off-peak power.... but 20 million cars charging at night means it wil be peak time at night !!
Within the next 20-40 years the car will go. It will have to, by then it will be too expensive to allow.
Cities will be bigger, much bigger. Economy of scale, it's easier to feed/house people when they're grouped closely together. Whatever happens, the next century will decide the fate of the species.
