My son had female teachers all through primary school. There is research to say that the lack of this positive role model has had an effect on the development of boys. There is a big drive to recruit more male primary school teachers.

I dont think they have to be larger than life to stand out. They just stand out as there's so few of them!
Wench xx
My eldest sons first teacher was a man, he was great with the children, not quite as dynamic as John Cleese, but had a great rapour, my son talks about him still and he`s 17 now
Hi Flower411,
Not knowing the teacher, I think the teacher had a sense of humour which should be a prime requisite for a teacher. School is not just about passing exams. Teachers are role models and the world is full of personality so this needs to be reflected in the class room. If i had a kid i wouldn't want he/she to turn into a robot.
The question of why there are so few male primary teachers is an interesting one. Should the male teacher be paid more to attract them into the industry - controversial, illegal and discrimatory. Don't know the answer to this one. Perhaps the teaching association can increase their marketing and get out there and persuade further education establishments that a primary teaching career is the way to go.
Westgate.
I don't think they have to be larger than life (no more so than female teachers - to an extent it's acting every single day, I think).
I think because there are fewer male primary school teachers, they do stand out - but not always in a good way.
Wench - there will be research to show anything you want, if you look hard enough wink Children don't need male role models in school or at home, if the mum gets the parenting bit right. I'm sure there are plenty of well-balanced boys who have been brought up by lesbian couples or who never had a male teacher.
Sandy - my first teacher was a female and I still remember her and talk about her occasionally.
Westgate - no, they shouldn't be paid more than female teachers, but the teaching profession should be paid more to make it a more appealing prospect.

And they don`t need female role models if the father gets it right !!
Absolutely not - I didn't mean to infer that Flower, as I'm sure you know. smile

Theres Male teachers and female teachers.
And there's good teachers which can come from either of the genetic pools.
Scarcity of male primary teachers can, I believe, be directly linked to the whole child protection issue moreso than financial issues or any other reason.
The Teaching Association is not stupid. If they want more male primary teachers then all they need to do is deal with the problem like anything else. Define the problem and understand why there aren't many primary school teachers and then put a solution in place.
However, I believe in equality and if you are a good teacher then it doesn't matter what gender as another said. Whatever void needs filling to optimise a childs performance and roundedness (if there is such a word) then either a male or female should be capable of doing this in the 21st century. Just pick the right person to do the job and give them the tools to do it.
I have no evidence to support it but i do feel that it would be great and positive to have more male primary teachers. I think that children will look upon their teachers as teachers bur also as role models of their own sex.
I also think that its difference with parenting because the teacher is known to be someone they get to know as a teacher not as a parent. Is that clear? i hope so. The parent is the cornerstone to the childs life and though special obviously is also "expected" by the child to be there. The teacher is different in that they go to see the teacher. The teacher is not the maternal/paternal carer that they go home to so is very much different. . I think its significant.
My sons teacher is male, He doesn't stand out any more than his previous female teachers do but he is a fantastic teacher with huge amounts of patience like all teachers have but to be teaching a class of 10 - 12 mainly ADHD kids I don't fancy his job redface
I don't think it's the male influence just a difference approach to teaching that makes a great teacher and a sense of humour goes some way towards that
After having taught in Infant Schools for a thousand years I met up with a handful of male teachers in this role. Sad to say they were on the whole a sorry bunch who were completely unable to fufill the role they were being paid for. In 1 instance we had a male deputy head who was a totally inadequate classroom teacher BUT was able to talk the talk with the powers that be due to a photographic memory. He subsequently was promoted to head of a large primary school and was feted by the local authority as being a marvel. Then again they hadn't ever had to deal with the results of his teaching in the following year. I think what we need are GOOD teachers, regardless of their gender. These days too many males are appointed and promoted because of their novelty, not beause they are good at their job.
i feel if you can have a fantastic teacher who influences children in a positive way then that is whats needed.
if they are male i do feel that is positive, but only if they are the above,
this may sound odd, but i have witnessed a young boy who had a bad male teacher and a young girl who had a bad male teacher and the fact they were male and crap impacted more than if they had been female and crap. does that make any sense?
the boy wasnt from a single parent home, but felt the critisisum from a male about his academia more crushing coming form a male.
the girl was from a single parent female home and sadely had no positive male role models, then the only male was this teacher who was crap, moody, far to strict, not understanding.
why are there not more male teachers? i dont know, the pay is crap for starters.
xx fem

Bothered?
S'OK anyway - if they're talking about us they're leaving someone else alone!
I had a male primary school teacher. He was the only one I did any work for.
dunno
He was a Polish Albino and he was really, really big and really really scary! I made a comment on him on Friends Reunited and he got in touch and had some email banter with me. That was surreal. lol He's now the headmaster of his new school. Not sure how he did it or whether it had anything to do with his gender but he got results.
