For the past fortnight or so my car has been making noises it shouldnt. When I reach 40mph the engine has been louder than it should. I take it to 45/50mph in 4th gear and obviously gets louder. However, when I put it into 5th gear at this point, it is still as loud. When I reach 60/70mph, it sounds like I'm driving it in 4th gear still...get my drift? I just wondered why this is happening? It's as if it's not recognising 5th gear or something?
Before this started happening, me and Mr C could here a noise from the back of the car which, to me, sounded like a plate spinning on it's rims on a floor. This seems to have settled now.
I dunno if it helps but the car is a 51 reg Clio.
Thanx for any help or suggestions u can provide me.

By louder do you mean the engine is revving more than usual? If so probably the clutch is knackered

Yeah I suppose so...basically when I drive 60+mph in 5th gear, it sounds like Im driving that speed in 4th gear. Even when I do go from 4th to 5th, the engine noise doesn't change as it should

Christ that was quick, I've only just finished perving ya pics after PMing u lol. no, there's no smell afterwards whatsoever. So could it be a clutch problem? If so, what happens the longer I leave it unfixed?

Thankyou for the suggestions cfcuk and Sheddy. It's not actually over-revving tho cos the rev counter doesnt go up and up. It's over-revved once before ages ago so i know its not that...just incase anyone thinks it's that dunno

Gets worse and then you can't get gears or it goes bang and you find you need a recovery truck to get you home or to a garage.
If it is the clutch.

I dont want to scare you but Steve had his clutch done very recently and it would have cost us £560 if they hadn't done it under warranty :scared:

God, just as well it was under warrenty!
Just been PMing Sheddy. He reckons its not the clutch cos the rev counter would be going up and up. Was saying to him that Mr C says it sounds like a dynamo. Me lil Skwig is due an MOT so I could enquire about it when I put it in for that.
If anyone has any other suggestion, please feel free to share them.
Thankyou to u all,

There is a possibility it could be the diff, as it's a front wheel drive car any wear noise could sound like it's from the engine
How many miles has the car done (and do you have history to prove it?)

It could be a layshaft bearing or input shaft bearing in the gearbox....
A diff bearing dunno
Front wheel drive cars have the differential as an integral part of the gearbox...
One way to try it is to get up to around 50mph and put the car into neutral for a second and see if the noise changes...
Putting it into neutral will unload the input shaft and layshaft bearings..

Can i slip a quick one in....... lol
I have 2 auto mercs that have been stood for a few months and when i went to move them, the handbrakes?brakes on both appear to have stuck on! I have tried the rocking them back and forth between drive and reverse and still stuck. My question is will it damage the cars to drive them like that? is there anything i as non techie person can do to remedy this?
One of them is a 4matic (auto 4 wheel drive) does that make any diffrence to any of the questions above?
I dont want to do something that will make the situation worse...merc stealerships have had far too much money out of me to be giving them anymore.

Its probably best the pads are removed...........Disks cleaned and pads refitted/replaced as it would appear they have siezed...
Possibly have a rolling road brake test to test the brake efficiency in case a caliper has siezed as well..
