Real or Psychosomatic

I've been thinking about this while walking the dog.. (all my thinking is either done while out walking the dog or sat on the toilet.. lol )
Last night I got a little peckish, so had a good look through the cupboards to see what took my fancy.. I came across a jar of Marmite and thought "Oooh, not had that for a while, I'll have it on some toast.." All well and good, the toast popped up, I spread the Marmite nice and thick on it, sat down and thoroughly enjoyed it.. An hour or two went by, and I went back in the kitchen to tidy away the pots. As I was returning the Marmite jar to the cupboard, I happened to glance at the 'use by' date on the back. I was alarmed to see that it was January 2004!!! Now, after a few minutes I started to feel sick. I went to bed, and spent most of the night clutching my stomach feeling really rough.
My point is, I felt fine until I actually noticed that the use by date was over 18 months ago.
Would I have felt fine if I hadn't noticed the date on the Jar? Was my illness entirely due to the power of persuasion in my mind?
Now I'm sure that I could search the net and find evidence to prove or disprove the idea of 'making yourself ill', but that’s not what I'm after.. I was just wondering if anyone out there has also thought themselves sick or thought themselves well again?
Personally I would feel sick eating marmite in or out of date lol
The mind is indeed a very powerful thing and i would bet my weeks wages that if you had not seen the date you would have felt fine.
Look at people like Derrien Brown and what he can do just by using peoples minds lol.
My favorite was making a student drunk by showing him a particular word.
It was even better when he kept texting t hat word to his mobile lol biggrin
y 2 p's worth
NCB
We took our little lad out for a celebratory meal on Tuesday to the Chinese restaurant.
He had been told that if you eat the Fortune out of your cookie, it would come true, so he did.
We were really annoyed that he had eaten it and Lee told him that it was dangerous, could poison him and we would have to take him to hospital for a stomach pump.
Within 5 mins, our son was complaining of chest pains, stomach ache and feeling sick.
When he was told he should be ok this time the symptons magically disappeared.

Shame on you! Marmite is the food of the Gods...
Marmite soldiers hmmmm... However I prefer my own variation...
A marmite soldier... standing tall and proud, waiting to be devoured... I'll leave the rest to your torrid imaginations...
wink
Marmite is beer dregs errrkkkk
It is the left over yeast waste, mixed with a bit of salt, acid and wheatgerm.
Enjoy!!

Probably, yes. Do like I do, if it doesn't stink when you open it, if there's nothing growing on it, then it's fine to eat. Okay, Marmite stinks like shit anyway, but you know what I mean rolleyes

Me too :eeek:
If you went to bed thinking that you are going to be poisoned by out-of-date marmite, then yes, my guess is that your symptoms were psychosomatic. I eat all sorts of shit, mouldy bread, chips off the floor, that sort of thing, so I wouldn't let something that was 18 months or so out of date worry me really :lol2: ... but if you're the sort of person who does have more clean food habits than me, I guess it might have had an adverse effect on you
However, you could have been ill last night even if you hadn't eaten the marmite... so, seeing as we're using psycho-babble here, your symptoms could simply have been an illusory correlation.....we like to seek causes of negative events, and putting two unrelated incidents together to attain a reasonable explanation for a particular event often happens.
Hey, any undergrad psych students on here, this is your cue to read up on Attribution Theory rotflmao
But of course, the marmite could have been toxic and you are in the midst of a bad bout of food poisoning.... you have binned the offending food item, haven't you? :lol2:
my niece has got head lice and as soon as my sister mentioned it i started scratching my head... as did everybody else. Weeks later, we never caught nits of her.. so it just showed that it was purely in our heads... if not our hair!

Oh yes, now that is very true. Trouble is, when my head does start itching, it normally means that my 2 year old has caught nits from someone at his playgroup again rolleyes
Fleas are another good one. Just mention fleas and I start scratching. I've had some very bad experiences with fleas in the past

There's a flaw in the title - psychosomatic is not the opposite of real in my opinion, it produces symptoms which are as real as real. What about phobias, for example? The fear the stimulus produces in someone is not faked. It's far more complicated than that. sad

Yes.. the symptoms I myself felt were real, but my usage of the word 'real' in the title was meant to portray an illness caused by genuine infection or injury and not caused by anxiety or worry (although this is not to imply that the physical symptoms in being psychosomatic were any less real).
I genuinely wanted to avoid long drawn out 'thesis' about psychosomatic illness and the like, as you say, its far more complicated than all of this. Instead it was a humorous anecdote of what happened to me last night, intended to draw response from people who had experienced something similar.
Most people who read it just got hung up on the marmite, never mind the title lol
And I always thought a pedantic person treated kids at hospital
I remember in junior school there was a hamster in the science lab, being inquisiitve I thought I'd stick my finger in the cage..... the bugger promptly bit me and broke the skin mad
Being embarrassed about it I decided not to tell anyone, then spent the rest of the day convinced I would get lockjaw cos I didn't get an anti-tetanus jab :scared:
By the end of the day, cos I had spent all day fretting and opening and closing my gob like a goldfish to stop it seizing up, it was aching so much I really thought I had it
