We are not political or have a hidden agenda either Steve but we do have a point of view and unfortunately some people have chosen to take offence to our opinion and so the thread has degenerated...
So much for freedom of speech eh.....
I've been following this thread but wasnt going to add anything, but it seems to have descended into acrimony, IIMHO for no reason at all.
As has been mentioned by steve_lincs, we all care and the most important thing is that we donate to help those less fortunate than ourselves, be it in this country or elsewhere.
Having said all that, I think the tsunami is on different scale altogether....
I’m not really interested in whether people agree with giving money for overseas or home based charities. It is their own personal perrogative to give or not as they find fit.
The helpful thing to do is, as has been done, is to show people what and how they can help and leave it up to them.
If you find offensive for the government to give money overseas – tell your MP. If you don’t think the government are giving enough money overseas – tell your MP. If you don’t personally want to give then don’t. If you do then do.
We don’t have to broadcast from the rooftops how morally right we are. Just do your thing!
Speaking of Charity Shops (and steering the thread in a safer direction!) has anyone noticed how commercial some of them have become?! I do 99% of my clothes shopping from charity shops, and which shops I buy from depend on what they have at the time. Where I live, there are seven shops which I shop in regularly. Oxfam and the British Heart Foundation shops are the ones where I find most of the stuff for the teens, because for some reason they just seem to stock the more fashionable items, Oxfam is a little more expensive, but not too bad, but Cancer Research seems to be stocking less and less secondhand stuff, instead running thier own lines, and the other day I rapidly put a pair of boots back down which cost 75 quid!
Now I`m not bitching at the money they are making, the more money they raise for thier causes the better, if it is going to the right places, but I shop on a needs must basis, and I need to shop on a charity basis. When I shop at these places I`m giving and taking charity! Cancer Research is not the only charity shop which seems to be blowing me out lately, and I have to wonder if the commercialist aspect, which is maybe funding the administration costs, is overtaking the charity aspect more and more these days?

It does look like there will be more and more weather-originated events over the coming years - maybe I'm being over paranoid after seeing taht rather hyped documentary on BBC2/wherever the other night about "War on Terra" but it's a scary thought.
No matter how poor you are in this country or in many other places in the wealthier parts of the western world, you're still many times better off than a hell of a lot of the rest of the world's population so we should all think ourselves very lucky. I think I remember reading somewhere that everyone reading this (and most of the populations of their countries) are better off than at least 90% (may have been 95, 97% ish, can't remember from where I read it) of the worlds population. i.e. we all have a right to free basic health care, the right to vote when we're old enough, we virtually all have a solid roof over our heads, can access food and clean drinking water. So I'm glad a lot of us are donating to the less-well off and tsunami affected countries.
Is it ironic that with all the choice in food we have so many of us eat such crap?
Ok, enough with the political and social commenting... Sorry... Back to the sex (if only... :-)
