reducing pics to fit avatar

I think its about time i got an avatar. So my source of pics are all over 20kb . I cant help it if they are big!
Any ideas how i reduce them?

Resize them in paint shop pro, photoshop or irfanview. If you don't have the software, just download Irfanview. It's a tiny program and easy to use.
