ello every 1 ! i just thought i would get ur opinion i have just spent some time clearing my drive way of the snow and ice as i was it was a problem getting in/out. today i went to a supermarket and bought 2 packs of 3kg table salt ! i was thinking as i have got about a tonne of sharp sand left over from a project, if it would be worth mixing the sharp sand with the salt and using it to grit my drive ?
about 50/50 ratio about right, but sand will really wear carpets if it gets walked into your house.
Sand can become sludgy as the ice melts. It may be worth having a really scrubby coir mat outside the door and instigate a 'shoes off at teh door' policy.
Table salt dissolves fairly fast, so you'll have to replace it if there is a thaw/freeze/thaw cycle. But unless it is washed away you may not need to replace the sand as much.
Take care that not too much sand ends up in any road drains as you would be held accountable if it was involved in blocking the drain.
Personally I plan to purchase a large bag of 'proper' salt when this is over and the supplies are avaiable and keep it for next time. It is tonnes more effective than table salt.
thanks for the tips ! i did tyr to get some of the proper stuff but could not find any anywhere local! but i undersand the red salt/grit works much better than the white stuff for some reason.
