with the advent of all this modern technology, people forget/dont bother using the skills that serve them better in the advent of the technology failure.
Worked with a reeally old anaesthetist who hated the new all singing, all dancing patient monitors with a passion, and refused to use them.
he would rant on about the doctors of today relying to heavily on monitors and not trusting their own eyes, ears and common sense.
"ODA Bonedigger" He would say "If I cannot tell the state of a patient with my own eyes and my own good judgement, I have no business being an anaesthetist"
Our Satnav broke down the morning after a munch in the midlands. Had to remember our way back.
Used maps ever since.
.
Well I love my SatNav.
As 99% of my driving is done alone, and in towns, it would be much harder trying to find addresses the old way.
It gives me the confidence drive to new places which I do most days, lets me concentrate on the road, other traffic, tells me quite accurately how far I am away from an address - and my ETA... I couldn't manage without mine.
Satnav is great when you are driving alone. But I never drive without my map and I always (mostly) check the route beforehand. The satnav only shows you the road and a bit of surrounding. you really need to be aware of other places around you - village names, connecting roads etc.
Being able to navigate by the sun helps - on the occasions when is actually shines biggrin

I agree Cherry, but I think the problem some people have is that they depend solely on the satnav and don't use common sense as well.
Mine is great but at times will tell me to turn down a dirt track or something similar, at which point I ignore it till it comes up with a better route or I work out where I should be going.

Nope. I'm completely useless :giggle:
i only put 95% trust in my sat nav,ie/ plan route first to make sure she's sending me the right way, my worry is with all this new technology how long will it be before they use our sat navs to monitor us for speeding over a distance?
I got us lost going to the Wilts camp once and Dai said 'Sassnav' is shite rolleyes
I don't have a satnav though as I work in the community at night I should get one. I use google maps and it serves me well biggrin

When will Sat Navs learn where places are ??
I had a call from another delivery driver today, trying to negotiate an impossible corner into our address rolleyes
I told him to stay right where he was, cos I`d come and show him the way to the 20foot wide entrance off the main road !!!!
He said ...
"But ... I haven`t told you where I am"
I said
"Have you been following a Sat Nav ? "
He said
"Yes"
I said
"Then I know exactly where you are !! "
Don`t people have maps any more ???? dunno

as a courier its imperative I know exactly where I am going
so I have 2 both tom tom and both with oooddles of information on either ........
! this tells me where police cameras and scanners are petrol stations garages etc :P :P :P :P ......
would be lost without them but ??????? yes I still have a bag full of maps as even sat nav's are not fool proof
so if your courier was a proffesional he should have got your delivery done easy peasy , I suppose there are gifted amateaurs around :P :P :P

Ordinary satnavs are not programmed for Trucks. There are commercially available versions for them but are expensive. The Garmin group are currently developing a Truck option to avoid low bridges and narrow roads - they are currently mapping the uk again for this purpose..... lol

garmin is pre loaded with information :P :P :P
its not satelite driven so no up to date info is received unless you pay for a download
as for bridges the tom tom will tell you the height of a bridge ......but not the width of a road
guess they havent quite got it right yet redface
