I am sitting here on tender hooks waiting to find out what schools my 11 year old twins will be attending for the next 5 years. I have a boy and a girl, and would like them to go to a mixed school. In our borough there are no mixed schools so had to apply for the independent schools which meant both our children sitting a test. We were told we had 6 choices for each but couldn’t find 6 that we would be happy to send our children to. And a couple we have put down are single sex schools, which given a choice I would abolish (I know others will disagree). But I feel part of life’s education is being able to understand the opposite sex’s to.
Do we really have a choice?
I sympathise.
My step daughter was offered one of the worst schools in teh country and I fought tooth and nail to get her a place in a reasonably good school. Unfortunately that happened to be single sex, not perfect but a darn site better than the Cannon Fodder Comprehensive they allocated her.
I moved out of London into Kent before my other kids reached secondary school, solely to ensure they would have a decnt choice in state education. That plan has worked out rather well.
If you need to appela there are loads of resources on the WEB that will help.
Good luck
You have to fight all the way to get what you want, my daughter was also offered a place in a really bad school, a school that was known for its high level of bullying, where teachers had no control over most of the kids and that had had several head teacher over a period of about 3 years because none wanted to stay, i told the education board i refused to let my daughther go and kept her off school till i got letter saying i was going to court for not sending my child to school, which is what i was hoping for as i told them i was prepaired to go to court and tell them i wasnt prepaired to send my daughter to any old badly run school for the sake of sending her to school and that it was their fault i didnt want her to go as they was offering me a shcool of unacceptable standards and i was also prepaired to go to the local papers over it, it did'nt get to court they offered me a place in the shcool i wanted in the end.
Congratulations I am delighted for you
We got the letter telling us that our daughter had got in to the school that we wanted her to go to. Mind you we only put 2 choices on the form and the other was a Grammar school..... We had our fingers crossed that she wouldn’t get in there as the uniform alone was almost £300!! Not to mention the school trips every year, Japan, USA, Germany, Skiing to mention a few
Come September both of our children will be going to school’s outside our local catchment area as the ones by us are dreadful. Our son had to be moved last October because of the bullying and his grades had dropped. It got to the point where I was at the school every week complaining about something. After an incident where he was knocked out, that was the last straw and we moved him. He is so much happier now and in September they will both be at the same school.
For us it is a win win situation but having heard from some of the other mothers that isn’t the case for everyone.
Yes we are being let down by government.
School teacher becomes zookepper ( 12 )
I have found out that a friend of my daughters didn’t get an offer from any of the 6 schools on her list. She has now been given a school from the local government and as you can guess, is a school that is under subscribed it has a bad reputation and her parents are not happy. Our local government released that 93% of children had been offered a place on their list. She is one of the 7% that hasn’t. I feel for her and her parents, no parent should be in this situation.
We have been lucky as our daughter has been given the 1st choice she wanted and also the fact our son goes there too may have hepled a bit! Our friend's daughter has not been given either 1 of her 3 choices and they are appealing now... its so frustrating for them as it looks like she may have to travel further to school if they don't win the appeal
