All these ads on telly for selling old gold jewellery....
how do you know if they are offering the best price?
Is a jeweller better then a place like cash converters?
Any advice?
eBay. I have a ring I bought for about 300 quid when it was half price, took it to a pawnbrokers and was offered 30 quid for it. Suffice to say that after picking my jaw up off the floor I politely told them to stuff it and decided on eBay.
These adverts and companies will take your jewellery and goods for a lot less than their resale value. Go to a few jewellers and see if they can give you an valuation on site. Most of them will charge and send them away but a few might do it there and then. Take about 10% off the value they give you and stick it on eBay. Much better than a pawnbrokers etc
Its some pretty old fashioned stuff, and some broken, just sits in the drawer, so thought I could scrap it.
I don't know much about it but I'd hazard a guess that the places you see the adverts for won't offer you anywhere near what it is actually worth.
The value of gold even scrap is still good so you should be able to get a fair price for it. I'd check out a couple of local jewellers and see if they're interested first.

Errr, bit of a way out idea i know, but have you ever heard of a place called 'The Jewelery Quarter' in a small hamlet called 'Birmingham'? You might recognise the name biggrin
There's various precious metal traders there who should give you a reasonable price for it if it has any value. wink
Steer clear of any of the tv ads ... same goes for the mobile phone ones, you just know they'll give you a crappy price.
I wondered if they all offer different prices, or is there a standard price.
Don't want to be ripped off that's all rolleyes
Don't know if this helps but i recently sold some to one of the ones on tv. There was 2 rings a small chain & 2 damaged bracelets, i couldn't even find a hallmark on 2 items so no idea what quality gold it was. They gave me £1600, i don't feel i've been ripped off as a)it was only sitting in a drawer usless & b)it really didn't look to be worth that much in the first place. Of course i know these people won't be doing me any favours as they are in business to make a profit but on the up side it was so easy to do, no shlepping around pawn brokers or jewllers. Also the option of cash or cheque is useful too.
Thanks, for all the replies, the link was very helpful meat x
