Ooooh interesting!! Had loads of swallows where I used to work, I'm gonna have to go and see if they're there this year!!
Absolutely loved watching them with their babies, specially at flying lesson time, when they had to try to do the 'land on a telephone wire on a windy day' manouvre :lol2:
Swallows, traditionally, were linked with cattle, feeding off the flies attracted to the cattle. Over the past few decades farmers have been using pesticides on the cattle to reduce the pests...hence no food for the swallows. So we have had a steady decline.

Oh noooo sad
So the pests on the cattle, was it annoying for the farmers or the cows? Why do they use it?
House next door the house martins are now starting their second brood, they were here early this year...been coming to same nest for years.
When Ive got the dogs out over the fields see loads of swallows still but not seen any swifts yet....

Flies cause irritation and are a good spreader of diseases in cattle, sheep & horses etc.

Don't worry, the birds will get used to it, you might want to consider changing your diet though wink
