But it's late May and where are all the swalllows swifts and house martins? theres none where i live; usually they are as noisy as hell here, anyone else noticed any other summer visitors absent?

Swallows, traditionally, were linked with cattle, feeding off the flies attracted to the cattle. Over the past few decades farmers have been using pesticides on the cattle to reduce the pests...hence no food for the swallows. So we have had a steady decline.
