This is not a nice thread, and I hope I am not breaking any forum rules by posting it.
Over the last few weeks a fella who I have regarded as my closest friend has had more than his fair share of problems. His wife kicked him out, two of his stepsons beat him up, and he lost his job. I went out of my way to help him, he was welcomed into my home as a virtual family member until I persuaded a female friend who lets rooms to accomodate him.
Anyway he had his room at her house for about two months and didn't pay her any rent, and was thrown out. Because I had acted as guarantor for him I now owe my friend the best part of £400. This paled into total insignificance though when we went through his belongings in the hope that he had left something of value.
What we found was hundreds of photographs, printed on real glossy photo paper. They were all pictures of young girls. One or two were taken of his teenaged step daughter while she was asleep, down her top and of her bottom sticking out. There were a couple of pornographic pictures off the Internet, but they were inocent enough. What was really disturbing was the pics taken by him with his phone, they included hundreds of young girls, but never including their faces. Most were taken of there lower body from behind while walking, and many were in uniform on their way to the local school, there were also pictures of schoolgirls waiting at bus stops and girls legs taken while he was obviously sat nearby on a bus. One pic chilled me to the bone, it was of a very young and very small schoolgirl and he was so close that you can see his shaddow, including his trilby hat over the top of hers.
I spent most of yesterday talking to the local CID, I felt I had to report him. I don't know where he is now or where he is staying, and I'm certain that none of my children are in his photos. But in my mind this could be the tip of a very scarey iceberg, and if he hasn't already gone any further than following and photographing little girls then the chances are he will.
Have I done the right thing?
Yes I believe you have done the right thing....
The wrong thing would have been to do nothing and then maybe 6 months / a year down the line you see him on tv news after commiting an horrific offence and then living for evermore with the guilt of not having spoken up...
what is the world coming to ? You should have got all your mates together and used one of your vans to carry you in and then hunted him down... armed with Sticks and baseball bats you should have taught him the meaning of the word 'pain'.
I do not envy you. Yes I beleive you have done the correct thing.

On my life this was my first reaction, as was giving him a little rest on the bonnet of my car with my elbow in his head. But nobody knows where he is, the police will find him because he will be claiming social security. Also they will know if he has commited any similar offences or has been accused in the past.
A real dilemma Brighton and you have my sympathy -- but I believe you have done the right thing.
Brighton All i can say is fair play to you for going to the law..
you have my 100% backing for going to the police after what you found, and if this bloke ever turns up again a baseball bat should be at hand for you to say hello with.

I was being facetious.

of course you did the right thing.
now if he floats he's a witch so will will burn him.

That's not being fair on Witches most of whom are merely pagans, of which I am one. The police have the photographs now, and hopefully he is already in custody. Going to the police is not in my nature as a working class kid from Scunthorpe from a one parent family in a council house. But if this is what people call grassing then so be it, I have a daughter of my own and those girls in the photographs all have mummies and daddies too.
I'm still in shock really, we had been great friends for about ten years. How could I have never even suspected? :0(

Nice, I'm sure you'd be very understanding if one of your kids broke the law and they were beaten to the ground for it by someone who decided to dish out a little home justice rolleyes

If you knew where he was then he could now be beaten senseless and you could be talking to the police under different circumstances. I fail to see how your thoughts are any more justified than his thoughts or why you should get 'well done mate, you saved the day' pat on the back congratulations.
If i had serious evidence one of my friends may be thinking of harming someone else, i'd go straight to the police and let them sort it out, its a no brainer.
BG ... You and I have had differing opinions in the past, but on this occasion ...... hats off. you did the right thing so stop beating yourself up about it.

Blimey is this the real Splendid?
I think it is an impostor. wink
Yep definitely did the right thing.
the first thing is people want to react and punish someone for a crimes like the ones against children.
you only have to see the news recently to realise that sometimes the wrong people (or in this case person) get tortured or badly beaten to find out later you got the wrong man.
if we let people go around taking the law into their own hands soon enough people will be killed for speeding, dogs pissing on lawns, being drunk in public etc.
in this case you found the evidence yourself and reported it in the correct manner.
what you did was the sensible and logical approach, no one likes to discover things about someone they know and trusted.
im no saint and i did take the law into my own hands but its the mental penalty you suffer for it.
people who use to talk to you do no longer, you see people talking when you arrive (as if they are warning others or pointing the finger) and its like a cloud hanging over you.
and it doesnt matter if what you did some people agree with, they know it was you and all the nutter unstable element comes with that so people stay away.
the police are there to invastigate matters the public bring to them, that is why they are a service. you did the right thing and id have no problem looking at this person straight in the eye.
and if he has broken the law and the cps have enough grounds to proceed then stand up and be proud because you may have saved someone later on from something which would scar them forever.
